    Don't purchase a hp pc< mine's ") month old and not upgradable

My HP PC is 20 months old and they have decided not to provide the drivers for the graphic card (which I find is over 5 years old) for Windows 10. I've been in touch with their customer service, after being passed around for hours on end, and been told "Your PC is 20 months old, we are selling new graphics cards that will work with Windows 10, we are not providing drivers for your existing graphics card because, that way we sell more.

    What an attitude !

Unfortunately, this is not unusual for any subsystem, not just graphic cards. Although NVidia updates with a new universal driver, much of the upgrade really affects only the newer cards.

Manufacturers routinely stop updating drivers because there is no financial incentive for them to do so. Sure, it would increase brand loyalty a bit, but for them to have developers write the driver and then have it go through testing would not increase sales. In fact, since people would get better performance, they would not be inclined to purchase newer systems.

The good news is that sometimes you can load the Windows 8 or even 7 drivers and they will be better that the plain vanilla drivers included with the new OS. Some may give you the warning about not being certified, but none should do any damage if you decide to try them.

Additionally, I've even updated different models of the same brand with the drivers built for the newer model. So, if you have a HP series system, look for it's newer replacement model and see if there is a Windows 10 driver for it. During install, it may come back and say you don't have the correct hardware for it, or it may load fine. If you decide to do this, install one at a time so you can determine what's wrong. If there is a problem.

  5. The OEM has every right to decide when they stop supporting a device. After about a year, HP does not post many updates on their support page. This has little to do with reality though - the component OEM (graphics card in your case) usually has updated drivers.

The really good news is that Windows 10 supplies almost every driver needed. The only HP driver not provided on my HP dv6, was Drive Guard (parks the heads on the HD if you drop the machine).

Please update the Systems Specs in your forum profile with complete information.
    • In the System Manufacturer/Model Number field, manually type Desktop or Laptop adding it to the information already in the field. The specific model number is important - there are often many models of a given series.
For example, my machine is a HP Pavilion dv6, but there are tens of the dv6 series, so dv6-6c10us is the specific model.

    • Specify Custom Build as the manufacturer if it is not an OEM machine.
The easiest way to do this is to use the information from a PUBLISHED Speccy report.
See: Speccy - Publish Snapshot of your System Specs

Post the link to the report that Speccy gives you and also open the Speccy link.
Then click here to view your System Specs on this forum.

When you have both windows open, put them side-by-side and simply copy the information, field by field, from the Speccy report to your System Specs.

To see what information other members provide in their System Specs, click on My System Specs in the lower left of any post by any member.

    Thanks
There's a very good chance that your machine can be upgraded, the only real limiting factor is the instruction set of the CPU. I'd venture that your CPU supported the necessary instructions.

The worst case would be that you might have to upgrade the graphics card.

I've tried the 'recommended' Catalyst 15.7.1 this gives the driver 15.200.1062.1004 which only offers a resolution of 1024 x 768 there is no 1920 x 1080.

I've tried dropping back to previous versions, but the stop installing saying they are not the correct driver.

Let's compare purchasing a car to my computer, after 20 months you need new tyres, you go to the tyre depot and they tell you "Unfortunatly only your model car uses this size tyres, so no one's producing new tyres for it. We suggest you purchase new wheels as well as tyres for it".

If you work for HP you say "Oh good, i'll do that right away".

Do you want assistance, or are you just here to rant?

If it's the former, fill out your system specs. It's possible that suitable drivers are available for your display adapter, even if it's not covered in the scripts provided to HP's support personnel. (I presume that HP outsources its support to some developing country with a significant supply of English speakers, just like most other manufacturers.)

Definatly rant at HP, there support for a 20 month old PC is non existant.

I've filled in the requested information, any suggestions would be appreciated other than 'Download and install Catalyst 15.7.1'

  14. Ok, I get it, I'm not happy all the time with HP either.

Try to focus on the issue you want to solve ... if you want to try and solve it on TenForums.

If it can be solved ... if it is an issue.

By the way, your specs say Win10 - is that correct?

The card is an AMD product and I would think the best place to look for new drivers is AMD and not HP. And I suspect that if the card is 5 years old model that AMD might not support the drivers anymore.
