Windows 10: Dos Program Wont use usb floppy

Hey everyone,

I have a new pc, with windows 10 32 bit, running an old program based off MS-dos that wont recognize USB Floppy drive.

Windows recognized the floppy and shows me all the files in the diskette/ but the dos program dosn't read the diskette
This dos program has a back up system , that wont recognize a backup of the program that was made on a windows 98 pc

Any ideas on how to solve this problem?


BACKGROUND INFO:
I have been working on my grandpa's new computer for about a month now.

We have a DOS program that needed a new printer so my 1st thought was windows 10 on new hardware, use a Virtual box to run windows 98 that runs the program and everything.
That was too much trouble to get working properly .

Then i realized win 10 32bit has support for dos programs. " cut out the middle man" the dos program works with my new printer using a program called "dosusbprint"
that all works okay.

does windows 10 recognize a 5.25 inch floppy drive

This is a real mess. The store PC uses a 3.5 inch drive. The original business software is on a 5.25 inch floppy.

I need to install the program on a newer machine via the 5.25 floppy and then copy all of the files on 3.25 disc.

I will try to locate a 5.25 USB drive to initiate the installing of the old program, which is another potential problem.

I wont get paid for my time if it doesn't work.

The disk media is not recognized. It may not be formatted.

I tried to format the floppy disk.

Windows cannot format this drive. Quit any disk utilities or other programs that are using this drive, and make sure that no window displaying the contents of the drive. Then try formatting again.

 

As far as I remember, DOS doesn't recognize USB at all or needs drivers for it.

 

Well then is there a program that i can use to make this happen or a driver that will allow the dos program to use the usb floppy drive ?

 

I doubt it, USB didn't come into full use until XP.

An actual real DOS program, or a program that runs from Windows command Line interface? I ask because its quit common for people to mix up the two. The Windows 10 command prompt is NOT DOS.
May I ask what is the name of this program is, link if possible, and how your launching it in Windows 10?

 

yes its an actual real dos program
the name of the software is called RPMSoftware 4.8
the program is running thru NTVDM.EXE that windows 10 :32 bit installed the first time I ran the program. The program was old around the time of windows 98 but it needs to read and write to a USB floppy

i have no way to link it here as there is no website/ no wiki page/ no link at all to the program anywhere that I could find online.

 

Ok, just wanted to confirm it was an actual DOS program. From the sounds of it, it needs to read and write to an actual floppy disk, not a USB floppy disk. It's looking for the old style motherboard floppy disk controller. I'm not even sure you'll get it to work from a VM? Might be time to find a newer alternative. Unless something posted above works.

 

It can be a size thing as well remember we had 20 meg hds in those days cso if its big usb it might not see it depending on the version of dos it may have to be fat

 

I just tested a USB floppy drive on my older Dell Vostro 1510 and it worked fine at a Command Prompt to write and erase, not so much with PowerShell. It didn't work [not yet anyway] on my ASUS Desktop from a year ago, maybe it's the difference between BIOS and UEFI setup.
