Downloading Update from Windows update catalog manually and then installing it manually solves problem but it shouldn't be that way automatic updates should work :/ so it's workaround more than fix but still anyone who gave up on Windows update just download update from windows update catalog. You will need to use IE (internet explorer because it requires to install activex control) .
Link to 3 versions 64bit, 32bit and server download depending on your system (32bit download will not work on 64bit system and so on).
Microsoft Update Catalog Use IE9 or later, windows 10 comes with IE11 that works fine.

If you downloading update be sure to match not only version but bits if your OS is 64bit download version that has for x64-based systems in its name.

Search for "news.softpedia.com/news/how-to-fix....". Click KB3189866. Worked fine for me.

Thank you very much for the tip. I had never thought of changing the button that was set to sleep!
I did not have to use it with the update because the PC restarted as usual without asking for a password.
That said, the update took away Touch and Rotation (2-in-1 laptop cannot turn into a tablet anymore).
Just finally got back touch, after the whole thing got stuck and a forced shut-down reinstalled it. Your button tip saved me! *Smile

Any idea how to get rotation back?

*Mad "Free" Windows 10? My foot! We really should be able to charge Microsoft for all the hours we waste trying to fix the mess every update makes. Grrrrr!

I posted this in the News thread on the update:

If stuck on the download, then:
    a. Boot to safe mode
    b. Rename the C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution and C:\Windows\Catroot2 folders
(Use search in C:\Windows\ to find Catroot2)

Note - you will lose your update history.

Restart, the update will probably start downloading again. Be prepared for it to pause sometimes.

or - for a manual download (which I couldn't get to work but people have):

This worked! I don't know why my attempt to manually download and install from the Windows Catalog errored out, but clicking on the link provided in this softpedia article worked.

Now, for the results: Update history showed "Security Update (KB3189866)" successful today, but "Cumulative" Update failed (yesterday). During restart, PC rebooted twice.
At that point: Windows update showed updates pending, "Try Again?" (clicked on it - YES).... Defender update downloaded and installed, but not shown on history after completion.
    > Windows Update now up to date.

I'm glad I didn't go through all the contortions suggested previously. I am a firm believer that things should work the way they are designed to work and "work-arounds" usually result in lost files or worse. I still don't know why the Windows Standalone Installer didn't work when I downloaded the file from the Catalog. Thankfully, it worked from the link in the above mentioned article.

Pleased to hear the info was useful.

I'm afraid I've no idea on the other problem other than perhaps for you to start a new thread on that specific issue if it is still misbehaving.

Updated one other PC without issues, but another hung on updating. I found that doing a Disc Cleanup followed by clearing the browser cache freed it to continue updating. This is a lot easier than all the contortions others suggested. Apparently Windows Update has been hanging for quite a while. Some PCs are more vulnerable than others. In my case, I have 2 PCs that I built as clones of one another, along with a manufacturer build. One of the clones hung while the other did not. The only thing different is that one PC was shut down at night while the other ran 24/7. The PCs shutdown at night, including the factory built seem to be the ones hanging. I also note that a quick message when first attempting to retry updating said something to the effect that "some" updates could not be installed because the computer was shutdown. Apparently meaning the previous day.

After 2 days with the stuck at 45% downloading and several re-starts with no success, today it went straight up to 100% and then did the long install. I wonder if Microsoft have done something or whatever?

I think they realize that pushing an update that included the kitchen sink was not a good idea.

Same thing happened to me. I rebooted today. Checked for updates. Hit the RETRY button. Updates went immediately to 95% and then started the install.

  11. I downloaded standalone installer and it worked fine.

Microsoft are stupid, they can't even release patches right.

Kind of best to wait til the updates are available as direct downloads and install that way while blocking the update service till safe to turn on again when MS sorts it out with another update and so the dice keeps rolling

Actually, installing the update manually, which has been suggested several times, is the simplest way to avoid any issues. No contortions needed. What you did was not so simple imho.

Really? Disc Cleanup is basic... very simple, a couple of clicks. Clearing the browser cache same.... But trying to find the Windows Catalog for the first time was time consuming not to mention knowing what update failed. When my system hung, it didn't report which ONE of the 500 updates (I exaggerate a little) was the culprit. Then to have it error out when running frustrating and confusing. Finally finding a link to it took more time. When I saw someone suggest just clearing corrupted data sitting around as a solution, I thought that was very smart. I tried it. It worked for me. Simple. A couple of clicks and I was back in gravy. Once the corrupted files were cleared, then Windows Update worked as designed, which was my point.
