Windows 10: Download speed used to go up to 40 megabytes per second, now it's seemingly capped at...

Just as the title says, I could easily go up to 40 megabytes per second when downloading things in the past but for whatever reason it's stuck at 3.5. I've tried a bunch of different fixes but none have worked and I have no clue what to do next. I've changed my DNS settings, I've clean booted my PC, restarted it multiple times, changed my download location, etc. It really is frustrating. I know 3.5 megabytes per second isn't horrible for download speed, but it used to be much faster and I am paying for the faster speed so I don't know why it changed suddenly.

The value on the speed test is shown on Megabits per second (Mbps) and the download speed value on Epic and Steam are shown on Megabytes per second (MB/s) by default (you can change it in the application settings).

1 byte = 8 bits

100 Megabits = 12,5 Megabytes.

The speed is correct unless you changed the application configuration to show in Megabits per second.

If you want to confirm that, you can share a screenshot from the download in the application

 

Has anybody else notice STEAM's faster download speeds lately?

For the longest time lately my STEAM downloads here in Long Island NY in America have seemingly been capped at 1.1 megabtyes per second but lately even over my wireless G adapter I've been getting actual downloads near 2.0 megabytes per second. Right now FEAR is downloading at 1.9 megabytes per second. Did I miss something? I have a Belkin Wireless N+ router and a 30mbps cable service. *Smile

I understand your frustration. As of now, Windows doesn't provide an option to display network speed in Megabytes per second (MBps). It is not possible to change the network speed in the task manager to MB/s (megabytes per second) in Windows 11 Task Manager, as it is always shown in kbps (kilobits per second) or Mbps (megabits per second), depending on the connection speed. The disk column in the process tab shows the data transfer rate in MB/s, which is a different unit from the network speed.
