Windows 10: Downloads Folder Freezes Explorer

When I click on the Downloads folder under This PC on the leftmost pane of Windows Explorer, the explorer.exe process freezes. The memory/CPU usage keeps continuously increasing until I terminate the process from the Task Manager. This issue does not happen if I navigate to the Downloads folder via C: -> Users -> <username> -> Downloads. Also it happens occasionally and after a while goes away by itself. But, of late, it has been happening more often. I tried looking up online and couldn't find anything definitive. I don't think this is caused by a corrupt file because I regularly cleanup that folder and the files on there have been there for a file. I've also run chkdsk and the Error checking tool for C: but neither of them indicated anything is wrong. I have Windows 10 18363.836 running on a Samsung 512 GB SSD in my HP Spectre x360. Please help!

I suggest you to Restore to Default the folders and document settings and see if it helps.

Step 1:

Please follow below steps and check if it helps.

• Go to Download folder.
• Right click on the Download Folder and go to Properties.
• In Properties go to Location tab.
• In location Tab Click on Restore Default.

Step 2:

Please follow below steps and check if it helps.

• Go to Documents folder.
• Right click on the Document folder and go to Properties.
• In Properties go to Location tab.
• In location Tab Click on Restore Default.

After performing above steps change the settings as you required and check if it helps.
