Windows 10: Drive Error Checking in Windows 10

With Hitachi being bought out by Western Digital I guess I shouldn't be surprised your link is giving me the same file Brink gave me last month which is a Western Digital product.

Rather than beating a dead horse I'll likely just replace the drive. Maybe buy a USB 3.0 enclosure for the questionable drive and find some use for it.

I intend to run a CHKDSK /B /X on a HDD (from another machine) attached to a Win 8.1 system.

I read this a few times but not sure IF/ WHEN & WHY & HOW should I leverage these switches. I can read whats written, but.. Not really clear.

• scan - Can only be used with a NTFS disk. Runs a online scan on the volume.
  • /forceofflinefix - Can only be used with a NTFS disk. Must be used with /scan switch. Bypass all online repair; all defects found are queued for offlne repair (ex: "chkdsk /spotfix").
  • /perf - Can only be used with a NTFS disk. Must be used with /scan switch. Uses more system resources to complete a scan as a fast as possible. This may have a negative performance impact on other tasks running on your system.
• /spotfix - Can only be used with a NTFS disk. Runs spot fixxing on the volume.

 

This week I have been running Chkdsk /r on all my Win10 machines(bare metal and virtual) because of all the upgrades we have had(specially my Insider VM) and it has found:
unused index entries from index $SII of file 0x9.
Cleaning up 6762 unused index entries from index $SDH of file 0x9.
Cleaning up 6762 unused security descriptors.
and
Correcting errors in the master file table's (MFT) BITMAP attribute.
Correcting errors in the Volume Bitmap.
on all of them.

I recommend anyone that has been on Win10 for a while, to run it when they have achance, even on their virtual hard disks(VM'S)
I only upgrade as Microsoft has created the OS to be done that way, and do not believe in doing a clean install(that's why I create system images, right?).
Being a Windows Geek doesn't mean being an expert, or being fast at a clean install, it means being able to reduce or shorten unnecessary system down time and maintaining your install.

 

The CMD check-disk off-line does not work on my machine , I got the message ; program autocheck autochk* not recognised.
This before booting into Windows .
Any help......?

What was the exact command you entered?

Are you able to use any of the other options?

 

"chkdsk C: /f /offlinescanandfix " in CMD
When looking in regedit , sessionmanager /bootexecute , I dont see anything in this key , I think it should be; autocheck autochk* . Its not there,its just an empty key, is this normal ?

 

Please go ahead and post a screenshot showing the command prompt with this command to see if anything may stand out.

No, this one should be there by default:

When inserting the " chkdsk C: /f /offlinescanandfix " in CMD , its saying ,will be executed next boot .
But nothing happens its booting into Windows again.
This regkey is empty in regedit , its missing this autocheck autochk* , there is nothing.
After appying in CMD , and reboot , I got this in regedit ;

Nope, only inside Windows by clicking on the OS-partition , in " This PC " .
Not working with CMD ,before reboot.......inserting command, reboot, no checkdisk , its skipping it everytime,no matter of the command you inserted..........!

 

If you like, try downloading and merging the .reg file below to set to run chkdsk at boot on the C: drive may help. It'll set the BootExecute value in the registry to look like this below.

Run_chkdsk_at_boot.reg

I just had another thought.

Do you have Fast Startup turned on?

If you do, turn it off and try running chkdsk at boot again to see if that may be the issue.

The reg-key looks normal , after applying your key.
Will go into bios for disabling fastboot now.
