Windows 10: Drive letter assignments no longer persists after update to Windows 10 1909

Since the update to 1909 my SD card drive letter assignment changes on reboot. The card remains in the laptop all the time and was always assigned W:. Now when ever I reboot, it changes to E:

help. USB drive isn't assigned a drive letter.

Any usb flash drive I plug into my computer isn't assigned a drive letter. The physical drive shows in the "safely remove hardware" but it doesnt show up in disk management. I have tried to populate the volume thru the safely remove hardware properties window and it does pop up in the list but it doesn't stay there. This isn't a format or assign a letter problem. It's more complicated then that. Maybe one of the services needed for usb drive management was disabled? Suggestions needed. btw external usb harddrives work fine.

 

USB Drive Letter Assignment not persistent


If you assign or change the drive letter and paths in Disk Management with the USB drive mounted, it should persist from mount to mount. Most experts recommend that you pick a "higher letter" M through V for that assignment (and don't pick the same letter for multiple drives to avoid collisions).

Windows 10 1909 Causes Secondary Hard Drive to not be Recognized

Installing the Windows 10 1909 Update causes my secondary hard drive to not be recognized.

Steps to confirm issue:

• Secondary drive not visible in Windows Explorer
• Secondary drive not visible in device manager
• Secondary drive not visible in disk manager

Steps to replicate issue:

• Installing 1909 update

Steps to resolve issue:

• Uninstall 1909 update

Since updates can only be delayed for so long, an actual fix would be appreciated.
