  1. Drive letter changed from D: to E: for no reason

Recently, I found an old flash drive that I had. I plugged it in my computer to see what was on it. The issue is, the flash drive I used every day wasn't plugged in, so it stole the drive letter from my main flash drive, and it jumbled everything up. Now, for most people, the drive letter being slightly off wouldn't be an issue, but for me, I store almost everything on that flash drives. Projects, Minecraft Worlds, Videos, and a bunch of other junk. And because of that, I have told programs that go to my flash drive that it had the drive letter D:. And my main flash drive is now the letter E.

    :)

    Drive letter is skipped

Windows 11, about 2 weeks since install, trouble every day.

The boot drive is connected via SATA-0 and a data drive connected via SATA-1 The second drive is shown at drive E. It used to be D. I want it to be D. Following a web page:

    Log in as administrator

Right click Win icon -> Disk Management

Right click on drive TERABYTE (EDrive letter changed from D: to E: for no reason :) -> Change drive letter and paths

The E drive is the only one displayed. Highlight it and click button Change

In the field to the right of text “Assign the following drive letter, click the drop down arrow.

    The list presented is: A, B, E, H, J

C is taken. D and I are not displayed.

What steps are needed to get D and I added to the list?

  3. Windows 10 Partition Change Drive letter of Healthy Recovery from D to F

    Hi,

Thank you for posting in Microsoft Community.

To understand the issue better, I suggest you to answer the below questions.

    • Do you have any files in D drive?
    • Is it a recovery drive which you are trying to change the letter?
    • Are you getting any error message when you try to change the drive letter?
Please post us back with more information to help you better.

  4. Drive letter changed from D: to E: for no reason

How in WIN 11 do I change the drive letter of the CD/ROM drive?

    Thanks, Greg.

So this is what worked, step by step.

    Reboot

Drive is listed as E: in file explorer.

Drive not listed in Disk Management.

Insert DVD, it plays after short pause.

Disk management now shows Audio CD as E:

Right click, change letter to R: (while playing!)

    Reboot.

Drive now shows as BD-RE drive as R: in File Explorer.

    The bottom line is

    - File Explorer does not provide for changing drive letter afics.

    - Disk Management seems to need a disk to be in the drive for it to "see" the drive. I can't recall is this is Win 10 behaviour

I don't recall having any difficulty with this in Win 10 (its possible that the Win 10 default drive allocation was "after" my external drives; or I "just changed it").

    Thanks for the suggestions everyone.
