Driver is forgotten after windows update

For the past 2 yearts, we've encountered the same recurring problem.

    The problem:

After a Windows update, about 10-20% of our clients phone us with the problem that our USB-hardware-device is no longer available when connecting it to the computer.

    Device Manager:

Our hardware contains a Cypress PSoC4 chip. When the driver is installed and the device is connected, two items are created in the Device Manager list:

    Universal Serial Bus Controllers
-> USB to UART Adapter Provider: Cypress, Date: 13/10/2015, Versuin: 3.13.0.59, Signer Microsoft Windows Hardware Compatibility Publisher

    Ports COM & LPT
-> USB Serial Port **** Provider: Cypress, Date: 13/10/2015, Versuin: 3.13.0.59, Signer Microsoft Windows Hardware Compatibility Publisher

Communication with the device happens via the virtual COM port.

The driver is downloaded from the cypress website: https://www.cypress.com/documentation/software-and-drivers/microsoft-certified-usb-uart-driver

Since you require an account to download from there, I also uploaded it here: https://file.io/tC4hd9Ua0wcR

    Window update:

After a windows update, there are 3 situations

1: Everything still works as before the update

2: COM port is no longer functioning. Device manager shows "Other devices -> Unknonw device" with a white circle with questionmark

3: COM port is no longer functioning. Device manager shows an item with a yellow triangle with black exclamation mark in it.

    Extra info:

    - All systems that have this problem, run windows 10.

    - It always happens after a windows update.

    - It does not happen on all computers. i.e. my laptop/desktop never have this problem.

    - Some of the systems on which the problem occur, are managed by an external ICT company. But not all

    - My coworker's laptop not managed is runninw Windows 10 Home and has this problem. I'm running windows 10 Pro and never had this problem.

    - It is unclear what windows version home/pro our clients run. But perhaps the problem is inthere.

    The Solution:

To make the USB device visible again, it quire simple. Richt click the "Unknown device" -> Update Drivers -> Browse manually -> point to "C:\Program Files x86\Cypress" and press next.

For the yellow triangle, the same, or remove it and reconnect the device.

    My question / discussion:

    - Why does this happen?

    - Can the process be automated, so that clients don't have to call, but that the software automatically detects that something is wrong with the "thing" in device manager, and automatically removes it / fixes it?

    - Can MS solve this problem in windows, so that it no longer occurs?

    Thank you,

    JB

    :)

  3. Windows 7 wont install drivers

i dont think anyone here understands what your asking either when its nearly a 90% english dominated Tech forum.
    Step 1
    reinstall windows from scratch
    Step 2
install all drivers from the cd that came with the god damn motherboard *common sense*
    Step 3
    update windows
    Step 4
install misc etc crap like flash java etc etc
    Step 5
    Install GPU drivers
    Step 6
go back to using your pc without issue.

NVIDIA Adds Windows 8 to GeForce Driver Update Stack

AMD may have been the first to be out with drivers for its Radeon GPUs that are optimized for Windows 8 (WDDM 1.2), but NVIDIA went a step ahead of "special-releases" for its GeForce drivers, and added Windows 8 to its update stack, meaning that Windows 8 will feature in the list of operating systems to pick from, to download drivers. NVIDIA will constantly update these drivers along with mainline releases for Windows 7/Vista and XP. The latest such driver is 296.17. This driver supports GeForce and Quadro GPUs, and according to NVIDIA, is a quick-update over 295.73 WHQL, with the addition of performance optimization for Blacklight: Retribution.
