    Surface Pro 4, win 10 v. 1903 build 18362.900.

I use it with a dock and as a tablet, almost never with the cover keyboard.

No problems appear in Device Manager, at least not now that I can look.

sfc /scannow has found and fixed unspecified problems, but made no difference.

I can find nothing about the bugcheck code that fits.

    - The problem appears to occur when the computer is suspended by button-press or by sleep timer, but also when it is left alone and awake, but less than 25% of the time. Now it is set to never sleep, but it happened anyway, twice today. So the only thing in common is that the computer was left alone for hours. It has never happened while the computer was in use.

    - When I go back to the computer it responds to power-plug changes or power-button press, and then touch, and will connect to my HDMI TV, but much else is inoperable: the camera for face ID, the wireless keyboard/mouse, the keyboard/mouse cover. It does not notice if I switch the USB key/mouse adapter to the onboard port, or re-plug it otherwise. I suppose there is a USB driver in common, but it affects the built-in port and the dock ports.

    - Restart fails, bringing BSOD "DRIVER_STATE_POWER_FAILURE" approx. This would be hours after the actual driver problem, but only upon restart. Last time the BSOD came when it tried to shut down.

    - Event Viewer shows bugcheck code "0x0000009f 0x0000000000000004, 0x000000000000012c, ...", each time apparently preceded by critical error event ID 41.

    - Dates all 2020 were 5/19, 6/7, 6/13, 6/15, 6/15, 6/19, 6/21, 6/22, 6/23, 6/24, 7/1, 7/2, 7/2.

I wonder if I might try restarting the USB driver instead of rebooting, but I'd have to do it through the touch-screen. And I don't see why it'd cause a problem rebooting, so I'm mystified.

    :)

  2. Windows 10 infinite restart black screen

The tutorials provided are just a list of troubleshooting steps. Use only the steps which apply to you.

Since none of the troubleshooting steps here worked, I'd suggest you do a Clean install.

How to troubleshoot an error that appears only at Restart or Sign out?

I get an error pop-up error message not every, but almost every time I Restart or Sign out. It's the screen with blue background and on top of Restart or Sign out text an error window says:

Explorer.exe - Application error. The instruction at 0x000… referenced memory at 0x000... The memory could not be written.

Sometimes the error code is just zeros, sometimes random numbers. I have tried so much already to troubleshoot this. For example these did not help in any way:
    • MemTest86+ (no problems)
    • Disabling any Services, Autoruns/ShellExView entries
    • Low resolution mode
    • BIOS settings are fine, no overclocking etc.
    • DISM.exe and sfc
    • etc.

However, these do make the error go away:
    • End process for explorer.exe before Restart or Sign out
    • Safe Mode
    • Creating a new user profile (almost the same as clean installing Windows, many full days of work)
    • Uninstalling NVIDIA graphics driver (then the card is unusable, of course)
    • Disabling Device Manager / Display Adapters / NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1080

I already contacted NVIDIA and the graphics driver is not the culprit. Something has gone wrong with the user profile as the same driver works just fine in a new profile (and there's nothing wrong with the driver anyway, it's just the Restart or Sign out process that has a problem).

What can I do to fix this? One useful thing would be to have a step-by-step procedure for the Sign out. So that it'd ask before continuing to the next step and list what it's doing. Or if I could just disable whatever it does when the error appears.

    Windows 10 fails to update

When you finish testing the Avast suggestion, make sure that you restart your machine.

Then if the issue persists, please return to the trouble shooting list in post# 89

I think there are three steps that remain; the WU troubleshooter, reset WU components, and manual WU reset.
