Windows 10: Dual boot anyone?

Anybody dual booting the release of W10 with either W8.1 or W7? I have been running W10TP along with W7 but it's my only machine(not counting and old XP laptop) and I don't want to upgrade. Waiting on a order of W8.1 Pro 64-bit right now.

Always booting from the wrong drive

Drive K is not a boot drive.

If dual booting Windows located on the drive K: it will be changed to C:

You have to do the dual boot from the BIOS.

This was in fact a dual boot problem. All VM is dual boot.

 

Maybe I'm not understanding, but if you have Windows 7 now, you could upgrade that right to Windows 10. You didn't need to purchase 8.1.

 

I would be interested in the answers as well.
I have a laptop which I currently have dual booting to 'Win7' or 'Win 10 preview 10240'.
The HDD has three partitions one each for Win7 and Win10 and one for local backups.
What I want to do is upgrade the Win7 to Win 10 and then plan to clean install Win 10 in the Win 10 Preview partition and finally restore my local image of Win 7 to it's original partition.

Anyone any comments on problems I might encounter?

 

I don't want to upgrade W7 to W10 but keep W7 on one physical HD and install W10 on the physical HD that has W10TP on it now. You have to have a key either way or you might want to say give up a key to get W10.

 

You can't have it both ways. It's a free upgrade not just free.

That is bordering on abuse.

 

I didn't say that you wanted to go to W8.1 either! You are trying to upgrade to W10 from W7 and still keep W7 which you can't do. I said nothing that hasn't been stated in other threads. That's not abusive or even borderline just stating the facts of the MS offer. You have to give up your W7 key something I don't want to do so that's why I ordered W8.1. I will install it where the W10TP is and give up the its key.

Whoa. This isn't even close to being abusive, or even rude. You didn't like his answer (maybe misread), but that's hardly abuse. Wait until someone attacks you personally before you sound the abuse alarm. If you think that was abusive, you aren't going to like being on an internet forum (although this one seems very polite and respectful).

Anyway, the second explanation was a good one, that you do give up your previous license. However, I'll throw a wrinkle in to say there's no reason to dual-boot anymore. If you want to maintain a separate, older OS version, simply virtualize it. So many benefits over dual-booting, and it doesn't over-complicate a system set up. There's shouldn't be many hardware compatibility issues between 7/8/8.1/10, so keep it simple and virtualize.

 

Are you in the insider program ?
If you are, just up grade the 10 you have to the newest version and stay on as an insider.
You can move it to any HDD you want to on the same 'puter.

Your 7 has nothing to do with it.

Can you show me where that comes from.

As I understand it the licence key for Windows 7 is still valid and the Activation of Windows 10 takes account of some factors (not publicised) inherent in the machine. I have not seen any evidence that upgrading to Windows 10 negates the Windows 7 licence or for that matter the Windows 8.1 licence.

I do not have any direct connection to Microsoft so if you have and can quote the relevant documentation I for one would be pleased to see it.

You make a very good point, but I would not like to be put in a position where at some time in the future my Windows 10 installation becomes ineligible for updates.
I wish MS would be clearer in their statements about the activation dependencies, motherboard? how?

 

That has always been the case when you use an upgrade version, the license you upgraded is no longer valid. If you ever wanted to upgrade to the latest version of Windows, but needed to continue using the older version, you can't upgrade, you must buy a separate license.

 

It's always been a gray area, in terms of what constitutes a new computer. You have to keep in mind that only a very small percentage build or upgrade computers. The vast majority of people buy a computer, then buy a new one when they need it. The safest way to consider "a new computer" is the go by the motherboard. If that's changed, it is a new computer.
