    Dual Boot Win7/Win10

Reloaded factory software on Dell XPS laptop Win7. Created additional partition for Win10. Installed Win10 iso from boot to the separate partition. Previously labeled C drive as Win7 and D drive as Win10. Default boot is Win7. Works fine. On the boot screen I choose Win10. Works fine. . Under Win7 boot shows c as win7 and d as win10. When I look at file explorer in Win10 it shows C drive as Win10 and D drive as Win7. What can I do to stop this from happening?

    :)

ual boot system upgrade to windows 10

Thanks Jessen for the hint. I was expecting a yes or no answer, since I already have a dual boot system(xp+win7), and if I upgrade win10 from win7 boot, would win7 be replaced by win10 and becomes a (xp+win10) dual boot system?

But it looks more complicated than I thought, should I check current system has xp and win7 are installed in DIFFERENT partitions, otherwise xp would be gone after win7 is upgraded to win10 if xp and win7 are in SAME partition?

So this did fix the booting into win10 first issue, i can now boot into win10 or win7 from the BCD boot menu and the win10 boot menu doesn't interfere or cause a dual boot to get back into win7.

    Dual Boot Win7/Win10

That's the way it works......The OS doesn't know if there is another OS Installed until it's booted up. When it does boot up....the OS of choice is the primary OS and therefore selected as C.....and any other is given a drive letter that's up next, whatever that letter may be.

To clarify - Primary OS gets C. Secondary OS gets the next free drive letter in sequence.

In fact, it will usually remember that assignment even if intermediate letters become free.

Some people actually like to remove drive letter of secondary OS so it is invisible to primary OS to avoid getting confused e.g. deleting files in wrong OS, or putting new files in wrong place.

  6. Hi,
Yep gets a little interesting looking at This PC and another os listed as a drive letter *Biggrin
Oops and it's good way to corrupt your 7
10 on the other hand has no problems messing with 7's partition but on 7 you'll get a security alert you don't have permissions to look at or copy too and or from 10's partition.
Hiding 7 is a good idea to do.

You can reassign drive letters which may confuse Windows. I just use meaningful labels for the disks i.e. Windows 10 OS & Windows 7 OS.
