Windows 10: Dual Boot Windows 10 & Ubuntu on Seperate HDDs

I am looking to dual boot Windows 10 with Ubuntu. Windows is currently installed on a 256gb SSD while I have a 1TB HDD for general data storage which I don't really use since I have several external devices. Is it possible to dual boot this way since most methods I come across tend to assume you are just dual booting onto the same drive.

How to make a Dell laptop (preinstalled with Ubuntu 14.04 SP1) dual boot with Ubuntu and Windows 10 Home OS

Two days back I bought one Dell Inspiron 15 3552 Laptop having the configuration as Intel Pentium Processor N3710, Ubuntu Linux 14.04 SPA, 4 GB RAM, 500GB HDD, Intel HD graphics.

I want to make this laptop dual boot with Ubuntu OS and Microsoft Windows 10 Home. Although I know how to make a system dual boot with an already installed Windows OS not with preinstalled Ubuntu OS.

It is very easy, and (in my experience) the BEST way to do it -- with each OS having its own disk.

Do the following:
1) Disconnect the Windows disk leaving only the intended Ubuntu disk connected
2) Boot from the Ubuntu install media
3) Install Ubuntu
4) When done, shut down the PC and reconnect the Windows disk
5) Reboot -- but STILL from the Ubuntu disk
6) When at the Ubuntu desktop, open a terminal and enter "sudo update-grub"
7) When you then reboot, you will be presented with a GRUB menu containing entries for Windows and Ubuntu

If you want further customizing of boot options in Ubuntu, install a package known as Grub-Customizer.

 

Yes, just make sure to disconnect the Windows 10 SSD when you install Linux to the HDD. After it is installed, then you can reconnect the Windows 10 SSD and use the BIOS or UEFI boot override menu to pick which drive to boot from.

 

When you say disconnect the drive do you actually mean physically open up the computer and unplug the cable. Or is that something I do in the BIOS.

 

We both mean physically unplug either the data or the power cable. I prefer to unplug the data cable.

The reason is to prevent Ubuntu from writing its boot files to the Windows 10 drive and messing it up.
