Windows 10: Dual Boot Windows 10 with Windows 7 or Windows 8

Is there a way to delete the dual boot configuration once the Tech Preview expires?

Sure, you can pretty much do the same below by just deleting the Windows 10 installation, and removing it's entry in msconfig. *Smile

Dual Boot Windows 7 and Windows 8 - Delete Windows 8

 

W10 (9926) x64 is Dual boot on a win 7 x64 partition here installed with ISO DVD install was smooth runs reasonably well (pretty fast also ) only mis behaves occasionally but can be persistent when it does. I am using for daily driver now with Chrome x64 as default browser.

Seems to me IE11 (specific to this build) is very fast but unstable now and then and page reliability could be better ...no matter I always use Chrome as default anyway . F/F runs decent on W10 also . ..... I think they fixed the restore point thing since OCT build .

 

Did that along with Windows 8.1 on the flat screen,nice*Biggrin

with Windows 8.1 and updates. Not working. Also I keep getting this.
Unable to boot Win 8.1: Error bad_system_config_info


I will deal with it*Smile

So we couldn't complete the updates. So were undoing changes don't turn off your computer. But I WILL lol.

Thanks for the great tutorial! I have a follow-up question for the gurus here (I promise I tried to piece it together from comments first but either missed it or it wasn't stated). I'm trying to dual boot on a Win 8.1 laptop (with UEFI) that has only 1 drive. i've partitioned the C drive (carved off 100GB) and made bios changes (enable legacy support, disable safe boot). Attempting to install from USB I get the error about not being able to install because the disk is GPT. My biggest concern is when going through the tutorial at step 10, it tells you to delete all partitions until you only have the install partition left. I'm pretty sure I know this but want to confirm, if I do that, will it not delete my Win8.1 install? I'd really like to keep my existing install so any advice is appreciated. (this really makes me long for the days of MBR and just manually updating a couple of things to add it to the boot list!).

Hello Kevin, and welcome to Ten Forums. *Smile

You DO NOT want to delete all partitions on the drive since it contains Windows 8.1 that you want to keep. You would only delete all partitions if you were doing a clean install and didn't want anything on the drive.

Since Windows 8.1 is installed with UEFI, you need to leave it enabled in your UEFI firmware settings.

With your setup, it would be easier to do step 5 to install Windows 10 to your 100 GB partition from within Windows 8.1.

 

Thanks Brink! I suspected that that was for a clean install only, but thought that maybe I'd missed something. I'll take your suggestion and give it a shot tonight... perhaps if I get it working correctly I should make a video about this and post it to youtube (giving proper credit of course). So, I'm glad to see it, I'm just waiting to implement it soon.

 

Next in line is the desktop HP 500-056. But first I have to convince Windows 10 on this lappy that it should have the Synaptics Mouse drivers installed so I can tell it to shut itself off when it detects my wireless mouse.

 

Let me see if I got this right. I can boot to a separate formatted HD which has the letter G:\. Install Windows 10 and will dual boot just fine but Win 10 will have the drive letter G:\ Right? Wrong? BTW I am doing a clean install of 10041.

Any help with this will be greatly appreciated.

 

All is correct except, when you boot into Windows 10, the drive will become C: by default.
When you boot back to the other OS, it's local disk will become C:.

OK I installed 10 on a separate drive but it does not dual boot. If I change in BIOS to start on Win 7, only Win 7's bootloader shows. Both Drive letters are C:\
