Dual boot with refined? New help from an old install.

Way before windows 10, I was running windows 8.1 and wanted to try Ubuntu. I didn't want to mess up my windows so I searched for dual boot. I believe I ran across this Install Ubuntu 14.04 alongside Windows 8.1 in 10 easy steps and followed it to the "T" but I do recall having refined installed as my boot-manager. I had ran into issues when windows 10 came out as a preview and installed it. When I tried to downgrade back to windows 8.1, I had no luck. I took my laptop into a Microsoft store and asked for help, but was promptly spun back out the door, since it wasn't officially released and the employees told me they were not allowed to see it, work on it, or offer any help. I contacted HP and they sent me the recovery cd's free to get me back to windows 8.1

I am currently on windows 10 insider, skip ahead, fast track (created a batch file to bring this back in event I need to restore factory image thru cd's). Anyone who wants it.
    Code: REG ADD "HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\WindowsSelfHost\UI\Selection" /f /v UIContentType /t REG_SZ /d Skip REG ADD "HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\WindowsSelfHost\UI\Selection" /f /v UIBranch /t REG_SZ /d external REG ADD "HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\WindowsSelfHost\UI\Selection" /f /v UIRing /t REG_SZ /d WIF REG ADD "HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\WindowsSelfHost\Applicability" /f /v ContentType /t REG_SZ /d Skip REG ADD "HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\WindowsSelfHost\Applicability" /f /v Ring /t REG_SZ /d Skip reg add "HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\QualityCompat" /f /v cadca5fe-87d3-4b96-b7fb-a231484277cc /t REG_DWORD /d 0x00000000[/quote] Make a simple text file with this and change extension to .bat and run as admin

Anyway. Since then, I have had no luck getting refined ( The rEFInd Boot Manager ) installed again, even with the dual boot to Ubuntu. I have followed the instructions in the refined site to manually install with no luck many times. Also, with first link, it discribed to split the partition, which I did, and it still installed both OS's on same partition, after finding that out, i just left it be that way.

Changes to what I am trying to accomplish:
    • Windows 10 instead as main
    • Linux Mint
    • Windows 7 or 8.1 as secondary
    • Have a 2TB and a 1TB external hard drive velcored to lid of laptop and willing to use them in process for extra space. Laptop also has a 750GB hard drive factory installed.

Refined had about 4-6 slots that would allow for systems to launch, so I'm sure I can get all 3 above.

I would also like to "hackintosh" as an other boot option, but I don't know if it can be done without the modded BIOS. I do have the "Official Installer" for high sierra

Bootable Disk - I started getting warnings about the disk failing.

I would have thought you would disconnect the old failing drive, boot from the USB media and select to repair the installation on the new drive.

The way you did it originally was to set up dual boot and the main boot info is on the old drive.

  3. Windows 10 in continual repair loop after MS update

I'm hopeful it will work for you as it has for me many times when all else has been tried. It basically creates a new boot manager and seeing the old install knits it into a Dual Boot as is standard. Then if the old install is functional beyond it's old
boot files, it will normally start and run. If so then with UEFI it only requires setting the old install as the default in Dual Boot menu, deleting the rescue install's partition and recovering back the space. In Legacy one must additionally check the System
partition is not the partition being deleted or move it first. Later you can remove the Dual Boot menu in EasyBCD or System Configuration Boot tab.
