Dual GPUs and Windows 10: Just want at least one of them to work!

I have a MSI FX610 laptop, model# MS-16GK, which has dual GPUs that are switchable.

The integrated GPU is an ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4200 (RS880M)
The other is an ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5470 (MSI).

I upgraded to Windows 10 x64 and now for the life of me, I cannot get either GPU to work properly. What I mean is that Windows 10 continues to use the Microsoft Basic Display driver no matter what I seem to try. When I open the Display Settings and click on the Display Adapter Properties link, the Adapter window opens and the Adapter Type is always Microsoft Basic Display Driver. At this point, I don’t even care about switching, I just want one of them to work correctly so I can change the 1024x768 resolution to something higher. Yesterday, I even installed Windows 10 from a clean slate, a fresh clean, custom installation, YET the same problem continues.

Windows downloaded a generic driver for the HD 4200, but it still continues to use the MS Basic Display driver. Oddly, when I checked the drivers for the HD 4200 in Device Manager, it says there are NO drivers installed for this device, YET the fields on the Driver Tab are populated with the driver's details:

Driver Provider: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc.
    Driver Date: 11/4/2015
    Driver Version: 15.201.1151.1008
Digital Signature: Microsoft Windows Hardware Compatibility Publisher

If I click Driver Details, a message pops up:

“ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4200 Series: No driver files are required or have been loaded for this device.”

I also tried to manually install the generic MS HD 4200 driver, by selecting Have Disk and selecting the C7179335.inf file directly from the Windows folder. It proceeded to install, but then gave me the following error message after flickering the screen four times:

“Windows encountered a problem installing the driver software for your device
Windows found driver software for your device but encountered an error while attempting to install it.
ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4200 Series
Windows has stopped this device because it has reported problems. (Code 43)"

If I can just get one of them working, I would be ecstatic! Anyone have any suggestions?

    :)

can't see Close button in the title bar

I THINK I FOUND THE PROBLEM!!! (at least for my computer). Dual Graphics was causing an issue (when my AMD Radeon discrete GPU card was trying to work with my AMD A-Series APU). When I disabled dual graphics in Catalyst Control Panel, it worked. When
I reenabled it, it broke again. So I'm pretty sure it has something to do with that.

So I then completely uninstalled AMD Catalyst Control Panel and ALL AMD display drivers, reset the computer. The problem was again fixed but I had the generic Microsoft display adapter with horrible resolution. So I searched for hardware changes in Device
Manager, found the AMD/ATI Radeon graphics adapter I had, and then reinstalled the Catalyst Control Panel. I then used a trick I read about previously for how to use dual graphics with the discrete GPU card as the primary one instead of the APU (involves
changing BIOS setting to dual graphics when the monitor cable is attached to APU output, then disabling Dual Graphics in Catalyst control panel and turning machine off, plugging monitor cable to discrete GPU output instead and then turning the computer back
on, and then finally reenabling dual graphics in Catalyst Control panel, and KNOCK ON WOOD, it seems to have fixed the problem while also using my discrete GPU as the primary graphics card for those programs/games that won't support dual graphics).

I will update if it in fact breaks again, but this seems to have solved the problem for me. So if anyone else has an AMD A-Series APU with an additional discrete GPU graphics card, try disablilng dual graphics to see if this solves the problem.

Also, I had a heck of a time getting the most recent Windows 10-supported display drivers from AMD to install, but finally did (after I first fixed the missing button issue by disabling dual graphics though).

At least one of my contacts lose its mobilenumber

    Hello jonathanSoder:

Thank you for posting to the forum regarding you contact question. This is very odd that information being added to a contact would disappear. There are a couple things I would suggest you try/look at.

If you are making this change on the phone, be sure you are tapping the save button. Once you have done this, verify that the contact is a Windows Live contact. If it is not, please detail where this contact is coming from, you will see a description just
below the contacts name at the very top of the contacts page. If you are labeling this information as "mobile", try labeling the number something else; home, work, etc... Finally, I would look at the format you are using. Compare the format with other contacts
that you are able to successfully edit. I would verify if all contacts include +, a country code, etc...

If you are trying to make these changes on the computer and want them to appear on the phone, try adding the contact to a group after editing. Once you have added the contact to a group, go to the phone and tap settings > emails + accounts > tap and hold
the Windows Live account > select sync. Also be sure that you are not adding the contact number a mobile 2, the Windows 7 phone does not support a mobile 2 number.

Please let us know if you have any other questions or concerns.

I read through most of that yesterday and it did NOT resolve my issue. I'm confident now that my issue is because I have dual GPUs.

The integrated HD 4200 only has support up to Win8, which I tried both the v13.1 and v13.4 Beta of the Catalyst software, but still the same issue. Also tried the manual installation via the inf file.

The 5470 seems to install correctly at first, but after the required reboot, when I check it in Device Manager, it says:

The device is not working properly because Windows cannot load the drivers required for this device. (Code 31)

    {Operation Failed}
    The requested operation was unsuccessful.

So, I disabled the HD 4200 in the Device Manager and rebooted, hoping this may force the 5470 to be selected and thus solve the error. This method seemed to work, the HD 4200 was still shown to be disabled and the 5470 stated it was working properly; at least that is what it said in the Device Manager. Yet, when I viewed the Display Adapter Properties, the Adapter type still said, Microsoft Basic Display Driver, and of course, I still could not change the resolution.

Not sure if this is important, but I've noticed a pattern of sorts. Whichever driver I install for the 5470, the same info is duplicated to the 4200, though the 4200 will always say "No drivers are installed for this device." There names will be different for each device, but the driver details such as the version and date will be the same.

Can you disable one of the GPU's in Bios?

No, there is no option to disable or select one or the other in the BIOS.
