Windows 10: Dual screen temporary image loss (Dell Laptop with USB C dual HDMI)

I have a Dell Latitude 7280 with Win10 Pro (Version 20H2). This has a Thunderbolt USB C port.
I use 2 external screens (27" and 24''), resolution 1920x1080. Both screens have HDMI connections and are not 4K.
I don't use the laptop screen which remains off.

I bought a USB-C hub (not Dell branded) with dual HDMI outputs (Resolution can only reach up to 3840x2160 [email protected] HDMI can display up to 4K) so that I could use dual screens as the laptop only has 1 HDMI port.

I have a frustrating issue - on some websites (same ones all the time), when I click a link on the page, both external displays loose signal or connection for about 15 seconds, then eventually come back on. Each time a click a link on these pages the behaviour repeats. (Websites e.g. Bose.com.au, Catch.com.au). However most websites are perfect)

Can anyone advise the likely cause? Could it be the USB hub (I assume it's not a bandwidth issue as my screens are not 4K), a cable, a missing driver, inbuilt graphics, BIOS setting (I do have the most recent BIOS installed)?

I Googled this earlier and see some advice is to install a Display Link driver, but not sure if I have a DisplayLink chip.

Dual monitors with HDMI not working

Hi Anthony,

If both devices aren't detecting each other after properly setting them up, try these steps and see if it helps:

• First you need a video cable for making the physically connection. For better picture quality, you should connect the computer to the TV using standard VGA ports or via the DVI to HDMI cable provided your TV supports these ports.
• Open the "display settings" in your computer and activate output to the TV screen. You can either mirror content of your computer on the TV or extend the display just like a dual monitor screen.
• Pick up your TV remote and switch to "External Inputs" from the menu. You will need to change the default "Video 1" to a different selection which may be "HDMI 1" or "Video 2" depending on how you have made the connection.

Important: Make sure you connect the cable to the TV before turning on the computer as sometimes it may fail to recognize external display.

Dual Monitor Question

Okay that makes sense with the dual monitor. Because i have all these cables, i can pick an hdmi or dvi monitor as my 2nd one for this setup.


For the triple monitor okay so i need docking port. But are there laptops or desktops that have say 2 hdmi ports and say 1 or 2 usb c ports? So that way, you only need the cables and not need a docking port if you want 3 monitors?


Also most ppl who have dual monitors dont use a docking port right? Just took a look and it seems some ppl use docking port for 2 monitors... shouldn't that be not necessary as long as you have an hdmi and usb-c port on your laptop? Is it because many laptops only have just one hdmi and no usb-c so thats why they need a docking station for dual monitor?
