How to Backup and Restore Sticky Keys Settings in Windows

When Sticky Keys is turned on, you can press a modifier key (SHIFT, CTRL, or ALT) and then another key in sequence rather than at the same time, to enter shifted (modified) characters and other key combinations. This way, you can press a modifier key and have it remain active until another key is pressed.

By default pressing a modifier key once latches the key down until the user presses a non-modifier key or clicks a mouse button. Pressing a modifier key twice locks the key until the user presses the key a third time.

This tutorial will show you how to back up and restore the Sticky Keys settings of any user account on any Windows 7, Windows 8, and Windows 10 PC.

  2. Sticky Notes Backup / Restore

    Hello,

To back up and restore notes from Sticky Notes app in Windows 10, we'll have to specify which version of Windows are you using. Here's a simple guide on how to check the build and version of your PC:

    • Press the Windows button + R.
    • Type winver.

Once we're able to determine your PC's build and version, follow the steps below to locate the storage files of Sticky Notes and create a backup:

    • Open File Explorer, click the View tab.
    • Select Show/hide option then check the Hidden items box.
    • To find the Sticky Notes storage folder, copy and paste the location below into your File Explorer's address bar.
username is the name of your actual user account.
    • For build 1607 or later: C:\Users\username\AppData\Local\Package\Microsoft.MicrosoftStickyNotes_8wekyb3d8bbwe\
From there, you can copy everything and paste it to the backup folder.

    • For anything lower than build 1607: C:\Users\username\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Sticky Notes\
You will only see a single file: StickyNotes.snt. You can copy and paste it to the backup folder.

To restore the files to Sticky Notes, make sure the Sticky Notes app is closed. Locate the same folder we pointed you to above and copy all your backed up files there, overwriting whatever’s there currently. When you launch Sticky Notes again, the notes
you backed up previously should pop up.

Please be reminded that notes in the desktop and Store app versions of Sticky Notes aren’t compatible. You won’t be able to copy notes from a PC running Windows 7 to a PC running Windows 10 Anniversary Update.

Should there be anything else, do let us know.

If you think this was useful, do not hesitate to "mark it as an answer" to help those who are facing the same problem.

    Sticky Notes backup/restore

    Hi Karl,

Thank you for writing to Microsoft Community Forums.

Do you get any error while trying to restore your notes from the backup?

I suggest to try copying the contents of the folder from the previous installation to 1809.

    • On Windows 10 1709 machine, navigate to the folder:
      C:\Users\Username\Appdata\Packages\Microsoft.MicrosoftStickyNotes_8wekyb3d8bbwe\LocalState
    • Copy the contents (all files) of the folder and save them to a new folder on Windows 1809 machine.
    • Close all open instances of Sticky notes app.
    • Navigate to the same location (C:\Users\Username\Appdata\Packages\Microsoft.MicrosoftStickyNotes_8wekyb3d8bbwe\LocalState) on Windows 10 1809 machine, copy the contents of the new folder to this location.
    • Close Windows Explorer, launch the Sticky notes app and see if your notes are restored.

    Hope it helps.

  5. Win 10 v1709 update and missing Sticky Notes

    Hi,

There is a possibility that the Sticky Notes were unexpectedly deleted on your desktop due to some errors while the update is being installed. For us to provide an accurate solution, we would need to know which build and edition of Windows 10 is currently
    installed on your PC.

For initial troubleshooting, we suggest recovering the lost Sticky Notes by following these steps:

    • Open the File Explorer.
    • Type %APPDATA%\Microsoft\Sticky Notes\StickyNotes.snt in the address bar and then hit the Enter key.
    • Look for StickyNotes.snt file and then open it with Notepad or Microsoft Word.
    • Look for the missing notes in .snt file, copy and paste it into a new Sticky Notes.

To avoid issues with missing Sticky Notes, it will be best to back them up. You can follow the steps provided by
Jennifer Bri in this thread. It serves as a guide on how to back up and restore
    Sticky notes in Windows 10.

We'll be waiting for your reply.
