Windows 10: DVD drive has been disabled on PC and laptop by Win 10 upgrades

I've seen previous threads on this which you've now locked, but they don't provide answers.

Both my laptop and PC have lost their DVD drives following Win 10 updates.

Both used to work fine, but now when I put a DVD in the tray, it says please insert DVD and when I click it, it opens the DVD tray, even though a proprietary DVD is in the hole.


I've tried disabling the drive in device management. I've tried updating drivers, both in Win 10 and using Drive Easy. I've seen threads that suggest I use a third party product (what an indictment on you guys...), like VLC, and tried it, all to no avail.


Please don't fob me off with an 'off the shelf' answer, this is a problem that has occurred as far as I can see entirely because of Win 10 updates. AND, don't forget, in two different machines. I don't think the problem's mine, chaps, so please don't ask me to 'correct' settings, or blame my hardware.....etc.

DVD Drives Configured as CD Drives post Win-10 Upgrade

Hi,

I have upgraded both my desktop (generic, win-8 Pro) and laptop (Toshiba, win-8 Home) to their respective Win-10 versions. All is working great, however, the DVD burners on both systems are now registering as CD drives - not DVD drives.

I have both uninstalled and removed the drives within Device Manager (and rebooted), both return as CD's again.

The desktop has an LG BH14NS40 BD-RE drive.

Laptop has an Matshita BD-CMB UJ160B drive.

Any suggestions on how I can ensure Win-10 accurately identifies these are BD drives, not CD drives? They worked perfectly under Win-8.1...

 

No DVD-R drive in device manager or This PC after upgrading to Windows

I upgraded from Windows 7 to Windows 10 a few weeks ago and since that time I don't have a DVD – R drive. I still have my DVD – RW, but the other drive is missing from the device manager and the computer list. What happened to it? What steps can I take to recover it.

Tell us more what's going on, please answer these questions:

• What is the make and model of your computer?
• What troubleshooting steps have you done so far?
• Did you make any hardware changes on your computer before this issue happened?
• Have you checked if the DVD Drive is showing up in Device Manager?
