Windows 10: DVD Drive not reading DVDs/CDs in Windows 10

So recently I have been wanting to rip some of my DVD library (for personal use, of course), but for some reason the DVD drive on my laptop (Lenovo Thinkpad T430) is not reading the discs which I put in. I am about to purchase an external DVD drive to read the DVDs, but I wanted to get some input from r/Windows10 to see if you all had any ideas about how I can fix this.

I know it is not a hardware problem, because I verified that it functions on Ubuntu 20.04. The strangest part about this is that when I enter Disk Management, I can find the DVD there, next to the CD-ROM category - it shows the title of the DVD plus healthy partition. In addition, there does not seem to be anything unusual with the device on Device Manager - in fact, I uninstalled it and reinstalled it and found no difference. I also have performed a clean install of Windows 10 (for a different reason - see post history if curious) and tried all of the registry edits that I have seen online. The reason I want to read DVDs on Windows 10 is because I want a specific, Windows-only software to rip the DVDs.

I know DVDs are a thing of the past, but I want to know if anyone has had a similar problem and how to solve it. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

CD/DVD drive not reading DVDs

My CD/DVD drive cannot read/write to DVD, yet it reads and writes to CDs! The Device Manages shows that the drive is working normally, yet when I insert a DVD, I get the error message "no media"! I have tried uninstalling the drive and re-installing it,
but the fault persists. I am also running Linux O/S in the same PC, but on a separate hard drive and Linux cannot rear/write DVDs either, which suggests that the fault is either in the drive itself or in BIOS, perhaps. By the way, I rarely use the CD/DVD
drive. Only to install software and that is no more than a few times a year, so I doubt that the drive is worn.

Finally, I also have an old IDE CD/DVD drive and when I connected it it could not read/write to DVDs, but worked with CDs.

I am running Windows 10 Home V. 1809 O/S build 17763.475

AMD Athlon 64x2 Dual Core Processor 4000

Windows 7 Professional keeps dropping the DVD/CD drive

Working with a fresh install (2nd attempt) of Windows 7 Professional on new hardware. The motherboard is a Gigabyte EP45-UD3P. Running 4G of RAM and an Intel Q9400 Quad Core CPU. The DVD/CD optical drive is a Pioneer DVR-218L.

Here's the problem - after two fresh installs, Windows 7 drops the DVD/CD drive and I get the following error in Device Manager (The device cannot start {code 10}). After the install, the drive works for a period of time, then stops working and I get the error code.

The driver appears to be a standard Windows driver (CD-ROM driver).

I've tried uninstalling the drive and re-installing it in Device Manager but it does not work - I continue to get the device error.

I've also swapped out the DVD/CD drive to insure it's not a bad unit. Same problem with both drives.

What do you suggest for next steps?? Could it be an issue with the motherboard?? A driver problem?

I visited the Pioneer web site - could not find any help or additional Windows 7 drivers.

Did you tried with the Burnt CD's?

I see you telling that the CD/DVD drive able to detect the DVD, but failed to detect the CD. I suspect that there might be some problem with the drivers. Try with the below mentioned troubleshooting steps and check if it works.

• Press the Windows logo key + R to open the Run dialog box.
• Type devmgmt.msc in the Run dialog box, then press Enter. If you are prompted for an administrator password or for a confirmation, type the password, or click
  Allow
• In Device Manager, expand DVD/CD-ROM drives, right-click the CD and DVD devices, and then click
  Uninstall.
• When you are prompted to confirm that you want to remove the device, click
  OK.
• Restart the computer.

After the computer restarts, the drivers will be automatically installed. Now check if the problem still persist.

Keep us posted if you require further assistance.
