Windows 10: Dvd player not playing, now DVD drive option is gone from vlc player

New laptop, went to play a DVD and it looks like my drive erased the DVD without prompt. Inserted new DVD after installing vlc player and still nothing. So several forums said to delete DVD drive and restart. Once it restarted I opened my vlc player and clicked select file, scrolled down to my PC, and now it shows only local disc c: no DVD drive to select.

VLC Media Player is not an option for Autoplay DVDs

I'm trying to work through 2 problems regarding playing DVD movies on my desktop PC. This is problem #1:

When I put a DVD video in the optical drive and the DVD is recognized in Explorer it does not automatically play in VLC.
Should be an easy settings fix - but it is not.

Note: I can open VLC > go to Media menu > and Open Disc > and the disk will play just fine.
It just won't Autoplay.

My settings:

• Start > Settings > Devices > Autoplay (for all media and devices) > ON
• Start > Settings > Default Apps > Video Player > set to: VLC Media Player (it is an option here)
• Control Panel > Autoplay > DVDs > looking at any selection here > VLC is not an option to choose

I think I need to get VLC recognized in Control Panel > Autoplay > DVDs
How can I do this?

First of all, did you install the actual VLC Player, and *not* the one in the Windows Store? Get the VLC Player for Windows, directly from

Official download of VLC media player, the best Open Source player - VideoLAN

Having installed this, put a DVD in your DVD drive. You should get a small dialogue box on the bottom right of the screen, saying something to the effect that a new way is available for playing DVDs, and to click on the box.

Click to make VLC the default way to play DVDs.

Then go to settings, system, apps, and make VLC Player the default app for playing CDs and DVDs. (Not positive this step is necessary, but might as well play it safe.)

This should do the trick. Now, every time you put a DVD or a CD in the optical drive, automatically it will start playing with VLC Player.

From what I can tell, this is an excellent player. It sounds great, for one thing. Must have very good codecs. And for playing DVDs, it has all of the zoom options you would need. I've followed these steps on two PCs so far, and it works just fine on both
of them.
