Windows 10: dwm.exe crashes when connecting game controller

Every time I connect my Thrustmaster 458 Ferrari steering wheel the screen goes blank for a few seconds and then it starts again. This happens regulary and even worst if I try to open a window. Making the computer impossible to use. Looking at the device manager, after a few times this happens,, shows me that the graphics card gets deactivated and the problem still persists.

I've done the updates, I've used the troubleshooter. Even followed an old tread here in the community of someone having the exact same problem with windows 7. I have even reset the computer wiping everything on it and still nothing solves it. Everything started after updating to the latest OS build.


My computer specs are:

Intel core i5 3470

OS build 19041.572

Graphics card Nvidia 970

disabling dwm access denied

I don't know if it is even possible to disable DWM and still have Windows working normally but I found a list of solutions that can solve problems related to DWM:

Game controller ID settings

Hi Joe,

Thank you for the update. I understand your concern.

I would suggest you to look for the Devices settings in Control Panel and check if the game controllers are listed. If so, refer to the following steps to alter the settings and check if these are helpful in resolving your issue.

a. Right click on one of your game controllers and click Game Controller Settings. Note where in the list it is. If it is not at the top proceed to the next step.

b. Right click and remove all your other controllers (not the 360/gamepad) and let them reinstall automatically.

c. Once complete right click and check the list again and see if the 360 controller/gamepad is at the top. If so, give the game another try and see if it detects your controller.

If the issue still persists, restart your console and then try to reconnect your controller.

Increase the window size step by step and watch your vga temps permanently.
What happens?
If it crashes, run at stock speeds as suggested before and retry.

P.S.: When your system locks, does the display signal turn off after a time?
Stuttering sound or no sound at all when freezing?
What X1800XT model do you own exactly?
