Windows 10: Editing the registry

I need to edit the registry to remove/expunge residual program entries after an un-install and clean-up.

Background

I upgraded from win7 to win10, and noted that installed apps several versions of VideoStudio failed on the 2nd and subsequent execution on win10. I've plagued various sites including this one for a reason/fix - no one had any idea about why, or how to fix. The upgrade method was the 'in-place' recommendation by MS, and I tried this 3 times recovered to win7 between trying to identify the cause. Failed that, just upgraded a 4th time, lived with it and changed the videoediting software until later.

The failure mechanism seemed clearly related to 1 the migration method and 2 the fact that all versions of VS had previously been installed under win7 and ran OK. How do I know that? User reports of installations under 'clean win10' work fine. Why didn't I try that? I did - it just broke to many other essential things. It seems that during migration, a carried over 'something' was causing the failure under win10. The most obvious candidate for the carry over is the registry.


The problem

I have completely un-installed the video studio software: no copies of any VS version, or known plug-ins for a version, remain on the PC. This was done using in succession the programs and features uninstall, a program cleanup tool for each version, removing any program folders using explorer and finally running a cleaner like Cclean to make sure there are no residual broken links in the registry. Despite that, on a recent search of the registry for the editor's program name search key: VideoStudio I was astounded at the number of items that were still in the registry. Not a great many, a dozen or more with only one in any specific place, but covering every version of VS that had been installed on the PC since 2015.

Later in the year I plan to try installing a completely new version of VS - one that hasn't previously been used under win7 - and I want a registry clean of any VS content before I try this.


What I am requesting

Is advice on how to edit these residual items out of the registry using regedit or any other tool that works. Specifically, having searched for and found an entry, how to delete it and what do I replace it with? A how-to guide . . . .

Trying to disable the Insert key with a Registry edit

registry edit no longer controls adaptive contrast

Did you back up the registry before making any changes to the Registry Editor because serious problems might occur if you modify the registry incorrectly?

Try the below methods and see if this helps.

Method 1: Disable Display Power Saving Technology.

Right-click on an empty space on the desktop > Graphics Properties >
Power > Power Feature > Click on the drop-down list and change to
On Battery and uncheck the box beside to
Display Power Saving Technology and see if this helps.

Note: Restart your computer once for the changes to take effect and check for the issue.

Method 2: Registry Edit.

We know that you have changed the registry value, but try the below steps and change the value of FeatureTestControl to 9250 and leave it in base hexadecimal.

How to Back Up the Registry.

Step 1: Press the Windows key and the
R key from your keyboard and type Regedit and hit
Enter.

Step 2: Navigate to the following key.

• HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ SYSTEM \ ControlSet001 \ Control \ Class \ {4d36e968-e325-11ce-bfc1-08002be10318} \ 0001

Step 3: Then, look for FeatureTestControl key >
Right-click on the key > Then, change the data to 9250 without changing anything else and exit the registry.

Note: Restart the computer once for the changes to take effect.
