EFS - Back up your file encryption key - taskbar button

There were some earlier threads about this issue but vainly searched for a solution/answer why the Encryption File System - Back up your file encryption taskbar button shows up.

    1. there are no encrypted files on my HDD : cipher /u /n /h shows no results
    2. EFS has not been configured - through Local GPO
    3. EFS is not in the startup list, but the service is running (efsui.exe)
    4. Bitlocker is OFF

I have to confess ... I did a bad action:
As a test, I did try to encrypt a .zip file, just to see what would happen/how it worked and being curious about the results. It wasn't what I was looking for, deleted the .zip file and emptied the recycle bin.

From that point on it has been decided by Windows that efsui should be running.
    Any suggestions.
p.s. it is a bit like other Microsoft applications: for instance, launching OneNote as a test, will put it in the startup folder and it will be launched at every startup. One has to disable it manually.

  2. Decrypt Encrypted Files and folders Backed up from Win 7 to Win 10

    Hi Dania,

Thank you for reply. Sorry for the delay.

    • Did you use any program or software to encrypt files?
    • Did you try to decrypt with the encryption certificate/key?
    • What error did you receive when you try to decrypt?
The first time you encrypt a folder or file, an encryption certificate is automatically created. You should back up your encryption certificate. If your certificate and key are lost or damaged and you don't have a backup, you won't be able to use the files
that you have encrypted. For more information, see
Back up Encrypting File System (EFS) certificate
    .

Please get back to us with the required information to assist you further.

  3. Need guidance on decrypting Windows-encrypted files after upgrading from Windows 7 to Windows 10

I tried your suggestion but the files still appear to be encrypted with EFS. Any suggestions on locating my EFS key used under Windows 7 (prior to the upgrade to Windows 10) on my backup C: drive and then applying the key to the encrypted files?

    Thanks,

    DS

Execute below command to list all encrypted files on C: partition.

    Code: cipher /s:C:\ /u /n /h[/quote]
