I have been going crazy with this problem. Any help or suggestions would be appreciated. I'm trying to avoid re-installing Windows, but if necessary I'm willing to do what it takes. Overview: If I try to work with an attachment/former attachment - app crashes right away. Reboot and the app works. I have windows 10 on my PC. I believe all drivers are up-to-date. I also have Office 2016 on my system. It's a 4 year old system. I'm not sure it's relevant because I'm thinking software issue but here's system info anyway: Asus X99-extreme 10 Rampage V edition 10 i7-6850K Overclocked 64GB of memory GeForce GTX 1080 I have 2 SLI My apps office, Adobe acrobat reader, FoxIt, etc work fine at first. I can open a .docx, spreadsheet, powerpoint, pdf or whatever from disk and work on it. If I open an attachment, or a file that was saved from an attachment, the app will crash. It will continue to crash until I reboot my system. I have unistalled and re-installed the apps multiple times. I can't get away from this behavior. Things I have tried: - uninstalling and re-installing office, acrobat, etc. - Checking size of mailbox files. They are a few gig, not 10's - ScanPST on all my mailbox files, multiple times. - I ran an offline scan with windows defender. - I run a full scan with AVG. - Uninstalled AVG and did a full scan with Kaspersky. There are some files that come up as compression bombs. I could send logs if that would help. I don't know that the files are bad or just large. Even after all the scanning and quarantining anything questionable the behavior is the same. - I created a new account on my PC and tried from that. Same issue. At one point I was getting error messages when trying to open or save attachments: We can't open: C:\Users\Ken\AppData\Local\Windows\INetCache\Content.Outlook\72xxxx It's possible the file is already open, or you don't have permission to open it. - I have run various hardware monitoring apps to check for hardware issues Samsung Magician, CrystalDisk, HWMonitor, CPU-Z, UserBenchmark. - Uninstalled Outlook and installed Thunderbird. - uninstalled acrobat reader and installed Foxit. So, it doesn't seem dependent on a particular piece of software but rather whatever happens between a file being a mail attachment at some point and trying to use that file. I am really running out of ideas, except for re-installing Windows. Any thoughts? Suggestions? Thanks.

    :)

    Hi Rebecca,

For us to assist you further with your concern. We’ll need the following details:

    • What email application are you using?
    • Is this issue isolated on a specific file attached or all files?
    • Can you successfully send an email with no attachment?

In the meantime, if you’re experiencing this issue using the Mail App in Windows 10, we recommend that you remove your email account and add it again. To do that, follow the steps provided in this article.

We will wait for your response.

Windows File Explorer crashes when attaching a file to an email.

I've tried it with a .PDF file and the same thing happened. My default app is set to Outlook 2016. I've used the "Send To" function religiously until a few weeks ago when it started crashing my Windows Explorer. I have not made any changes. Outlook 2016
is the only mail I care to use. It's the one my work has set up for me.
