    Hi there,

    I have been experiencing an email attack on outlook


    The attack copies old emails and contact names from my inbox and creates a new email that looks like the emails I have received before but this new email comes from a totally strange email-address and it comes with a potentially dangerous 'office word' attachment.

    The attachment is usually 2 or 3 letters followed by a series of numbers. It is said to be a Trojan that installs itself on the hard disk and connects to other websites to install other harmful software into the computer.

    I have been experiencing this attack on Outlook since mid August 2020.


    Kindly advise on ways I could use to tackle this viral attack. See details below:

    About Ransomware attack

    Here is Microsoft's Customer Guidance on the Ransomware Attack:

    • In March, we released a security update which addresses the vulnerability that these attacks are exploiting. Those who have Windows Update enabled are protected against attacks on this vulnerability. For those organizations who have not yet applied the
      security update, we suggest you immediately deploy Microsoft Security Bulletin MS17-010.

    • For customers using Windows Defender, we released an update earlier today which detects this threat as Ransom:Win32/WannaCrypt.
      As an additional “defense-in-depth” measure, keep up-to-date anti-malware software installed on your machines. Customers running anti-malware software from any number of security companies can confirm with their provider, that they are protected.

    • This attack type may evolve over time, so any additional defense-in-depth strategies will provide additional protections. (For example, to further protect against SMBv1 attacks, customers
      should consider blocking legacy protocols on their networks).

    Thank you for updating me HA.111

    Here is the step to remove that old email address.

    Start typing an email address into the “To” field. As soon as you see the old email address being recommended as one of the potential candidates, use the down arrow key to scroll through the list of suggestions. Once you highlight the old email address, type
    the delete key. In many cases, this will actually remove the entry not only from the current list of suggestions but from future suggestions as well. You may even find that as you mouse over the drop-down list the highlighted item will have an “x” to explicitly
    allow you to delete it.

    Just do this step and your good to go.
