Windows 10: .eml files found by Windows 10 search can only me copied, not moved.

The files are my e-mail archive, and not related to any e-mail program. If they are found by Windows Search in Explorer, I can only copy them, but not move. This seems to be a bug.


The usage case is obvious: I buld download the .eml files from time to time from various IMAP servers with a self written python script. To sort them into the folders of the various project, I do a Windows search for certain keywords and then move the files into the proper folder. This worked a few weeks ago, but is now broken. I consider e-mail files stored together with the other documents on the same topic as the only reasonable way of archiving.

file associations and eml files

There was some program which opened .eml tutorial files before file association was changed.

Is that program listed in Open with submenu of Context menu for .eml files? (Open a folder with your .eml files with File Explorer, right click an .eml file, select
Open with in context menu, and see the 'Open with' submenu).

If the program is listed:

Select Choose another app in Open with submenu.

In How do you open such file list/dialog, select the desired program, check 'Always use this app to open .eml files' checkbox, and press 'OK' screen button.

 

How do I change the default setting for .eml files?

Try rt clicking an eml file, Open With, and carefully follow through the several steps to assign your chosen program completely as default.

Set this program as default (but in your case for Mailbird). (Or the equivalent in Settings)

Note that eml files are not a default file type in Windows (i.e. not in the relevant Tutorial list here Restore Default File Type Associations in Windows 10 Windows 10 Customization Tutorials ) i.e. teh file type has to be established by a program.

In that case, although other web browsers can open the MHT files, Internet Explorer is the only one that will give you the right format. This method will not allow you to download any attachments.

• If you have hidden file extensions, activate them. In Windows 10, 8, you can check the "File name extensions" box on the "View" tab of any Explorer window. In previous versions of Windows, you must open the control panel and select “Folder Options”. Click
the "View" tab and disable "Hide file extensions for known file types."

• Right-click on the EML file and select "Rename."

• Delete the .eml extension and replace it with .mht. Windows will warn you that this can cause problems with the file. Confirm that you want to change the extension.

• Open the file in Internet Explorer. Usually, this will be the default program for MHT files. You can right-click on the file, select “Open with” and then select Internet Explorer from the list. Internet Explorer will display the MHT file in virtually the
same format in which the EML file will appear in an email client.
