  1. Empty "USERS" folder on other network computers, Windows 10, 1803

    Hi,

Since one of the recent windows update (unfortunately I don't know which one) the "USERS" folder from my other computer on the network is empty. This is true in both direction meaning whether I'm connecting from Computer A to B or from B to A. Also I do not see anymore the "PUBLIC" folder from each other.

It is important to understand that I have no problem to connect to the other computer as I have access to the share printers and to the "USERS" folder. I can also see the "DEFAULT" folder under the "USERS" folder when I turn on show hidden files. This is true in both direction, from A to B and B to A

The two computers A & B are running windows 10, 1803 home edition with the latest update, both have the same network setting, both have the same sharing option for file and printer, both are set to private network. both are configure with the same Microsoft account and I'm log in with the same user on both machine which mean that I'm using the same credential on both machine.

It seems to be an authorization/permission problem, but I have no idea how to fix it as none of the computer are prompting me for username and password. I even try with file explorer to access directly to the folder: "\\ComputerA\Users\myusername\Documents" and after a windows diagnostic I receive a message "You do not have the permission to access sharing" I did not have that problem until recently.

Any idea how to resolve that problem?

    :)

?? How do I PW protect Folders in windows

    hmmm?
Sharing files and folders overview You can share the files and folders stored on your computer, on a network, and on the Web. The method you choose depends on whom you want to share files with, and what computer they will use to access the files.

When you share files or folders, they are not as protected as they are when you do not share them. People with access to your computer or your network might be able to read, copy, or change files that are in a shared folder. You should always be aware that the files and folders that you share are available to other people and be sure to monitor your shared files and folders on a regular basis.

    Important

If your computer is not joined to a domain, you can use the Network Setup Wizard to automatically turn file and printer sharing on or off. To start the Network Setup Wizard, click Start, click Control Panel, click Network and Internet Connections, and then click Network Setup Wizard.
If you both use the same computer

You can put the files you want to share in the Shared Documents folder. Files stored in the Shared Documents folder or its subfolders are always available to other users on your computer.

    Step-by-step procedure
    Note

If you are connected to a network domain, the Shared Documents, Shared Pictures, and Shared Music folders are not available.
If both computers are on the same network

You can share a folder or drive on your computer with others on the network. You can also control whether the files in the shared folder can be modified by other users.

If your computer is connected to a network domain, use this procedure:

    Step-by-step procedure
If your computer is connected to a workgroup, use this procedure:

    Step-by-step procedure
    Note

If you are connected to a network domain, you will need to set the Access control for the folder or drive after sharing it. For more information, go to To set, view, change, or remove file and folder permissions.
If you want to share your files online

You can publish pictures and documents on the Web using the Web Publishing Wizard. The files will be stored in a private, online folder that you manage.

    Step-by-step procedure

If you don't want others to access your files

You can prevent other users from accessing your folders and the files they contain. When your computer is connected to a domain, this is called setting permissions for your file or folder. When your computer is connected to a workgroup, this is called making your folders private.

If your computer is connected to a network domain, use this procedure:

    Step-by-step procedure
If your computer is connected to a workgroup, use this procedure:

    Windows 10 Tweaks

Pressing “Windows+Pause Break” (it’s up there next to scroll lock) opens the “System” Window.

Windows 10: In the new version of Windows, Explorer has a section called Quick Access. This includes your frequent folders and recent files. Explorer defaults to opening this page when you open a new window. If you’d rather open the usual This PC, with links to your drives and library folders, follow these steps:

    • Open a new Explorer window.
    • Click View in the ribbon.
    • Click Options.
    • Under General, next to “Open File Explorer to:” choose “This PC.”
    • Click OK

  4. Empty "USERS" folder on other network computers, Windows 10, 1803

Missing HOMEPATH folders and files on networked computers after Windows 10 version 1803 update

    Solution Summary:

    1) Problem - After upgrading Windows 10 on both PC and Laptop to April 30, 2018 Creator update, lose networked computers and homegroup

    1) April 30, 2018 Creator update drops the homegroup from Windows 10

    2) Solution

    1) On both PC and laptop

    1) Run services.msc

    2) Function Discovery Resource Publication - make sure that it is set to automatic (delayed start), stop and then start services

    3) Reboot PC and laptop

    2) On both PC and laptop now see the following:

    1) Network lists both computers on both computers

    2) Networked computers lists:

    1) Network\\DESKTOP_Other_Computer\Users\Default

    2) root of Steve C:\Users\Steve under both Networked computers

    3) printer connected to PC under PC

    3) Mapped network drives can connect

    4) Documents, Downloads, Music, Pictures, and Videos of C:\Users\Steve BUT CANNOT see any files or other folders like vimfiles and _vimrc

    3) On both PC and laptop:

    1) Steve -> Properties -> Security -> Check - List content, Read (started conservative with list and read but can check all to skip 7 below)

    2) Give access to specific People should see

    1) Steve

    2) HomeUsers - Custom, with Read and Read/Write options available

    3) In Specific People drop-down menu, should see as for above

    7) On both PC and laptop

    1) Give access to -> Specific People -> HomeUsers - Read/Write -> Share (Seems to be the 1803 default method, see: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/4092694/windows-10-changes-to-file-sharing-over-a-network)

    8) On both PC and laptop now back to pre-1803 state

Hopefully, this information will help others to fix their network and mapped network drives to the pre-1803 state.

    Good luck!
