You should have a iaStorAV key. Double check to make sure. If you don't then you can just add it.

You will see a huge performance difference when you go from a IDE HDD to a AHCI SSD.

Why do you have the HDD in IDE mode ? is it not possible to switch it to AHCI ?

the Caviar black will run in AHCI or RAID too , I use the 3 of 640GB version in a RAID 0 array

Its a 3 year old pc and i never searched about IDE & AHCI until today. Because my pc was working fine with Windows 7 until installing Windows 10 last month. After that, ONLY when i open 8-9 browser tabs sometimes SSD usage increases to %100 and a few second later everything freezes around a minute or so. After freeze everything goes to normal and SSD starts to act normal. So after searching everything i suspected something wrong my SSD and did a read/write test which ended with approximately 200ish mb(which is low)

Anyway after searching a little bit more of what Brink said about AHCI causing issues about HDD i found something. If a HDD supports NCQ it's safe to use AHCI(in fact should use it). Now i changed my mobo to AHCI and i have no problem with SSD and HDD. Also my SSD read speed is 400ish mb now.

Anyway if anything bad happens i will write it here so others may be aware before trying. Also i will continue to search my pc freeze because i dont think it is entirely related to ''IDE to AHCI enable''.

    Hi Umut

Your freezing issues are almost surely caused by the Anniversary Update of Windows 10.

Check out this thread on reddit:

The fix that worked for me was the following:

First post here. First thanks to all for giving valuable tips.
When I had my Apple Mac mini's and installed Windows 8 and I wanted to change from IDE to AHCI I simply booted in Windows, changed in msconfig.exe to safe boot - minimal, rebooted and changed back again to normal boot. Recently I moved away from Mac mini's to an ASUS VC65R and need to change from AHCI to RAID and same trick worked there too.

On another note - some people have mentioned that they like to create/delete folders on the Start Menu. I have Classic Start menu installed (but am not running it...) and when I want to make folders or move stuff around I start the Classic menu and create / delete folders in there and it gets propagated to the Metro Start Menu.

  7. I attempted this today, unsuccesfully I'm afraid. I have a Samsung 850EVO SSD.
As I went through the registry changes I found that at step5 value was 0, at step 7/8- HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\iaStorAV, there was no option for StartOverride. I went back to iaStorV and found the StartOverride option there which I changed fro 3 to 0. at step 11 value was 0, step 15 value was 0.
I then closed regedit and booted to BIOS, changed to AHCI, saved & exited to restart.
Instead of restarting, I got this error message "INACCESSIBLE_BOOT_DEVICE"
I went back to BIOS changed back to IDE, same message.
Finally Windows "repaired the problem" and the computer restarted normally.
I went back to regedit and found the iaStorV\startoverride was changed back to 3.
Any idea what went wrong and how I can make the change?

Hello John, and welcome to Ten Forums. *Smile

If the StartOverride key is not there at step 6, it'll need to be added.

  9. Not being well versed in registry editing, how does it get added?

    Thanks

  10. One more question. Does the StartOveride key in iaStoreV need to be changed to 0 also?

One more question. Does the StartOveride key in iaStoreV need to be changed to 0 also?

    John,

Yep, it's not there. To add it:

    1) Right click on the iaStorAV key, click on New and Key, type StartOverride for the name, and press Enter.

    2) In the right pane of the new StartOverride key, right click on an empty space, click on New and DWORD (32-bit) Value, type 0 (number zero) for the name, and press Enter.
