How to Disable Ad Snippets on New Tab Page in Firefox


Mozilla uses Snippets to display tips, suggestions, updates, and messages about Firefox.

Some people have reported advertising displaying at the bottom of the New Tab page in the desktop version of Firefox.

The advertisement is powered by the Snippet Service of Firefox, and is intended to assemble and deliver content snippets to the about:home page in Firefox.

Mozilla provided the following statement:

"This snippet was an experiment to provide more value to Firefox users through offers provided by a partner. It was not a paid placement or advertisement. We are continually looking for more ways to say thanks for using Firefox. In a similar vein, earlier this month we offered Firefox users a free opportunity to enjoy a live concert from Phosphorescent.

In addition to adding value to Firefox users these efforts are intended to support an open ecosystem. When users see such offers no data is being shared with a partner until users have made the choice to enter a relationship. We hope that this strategy sets a positive example."

If you are seeing ads or other Snippets on the bottom of the New Tab page in Firefox and don't want to see them, then you can disable Snippets in Firefox to disable them.

This tutorial will show you how to enable or disable Snippets for ads on the bottom of the New Tab page in Firefox for your account in Windows 7, Windows 8, and Windows 10.

Here's How:

1. Open Firefox.

2. While you have a New Tab page (about:newtab) open, click/tap on the gear icon at the top right of the page to open the aboutreferences#home settings. (see screenshot below)



3. Under Firefox Home Content, check (enable - default) or uncheck (disable) Snippets for what you want. (see screenshot below)

Just as long as the user can still customize what does appear on the New Tab page I don't see this being a big deal. Mozilla does need funds to keep up the development of Firefox and I'm personally fine with this method.

Enable or Disable New Tab Page Material Design UI in Google Chrome  

It is basically working now but there is a weird problem. I've set the new tab page to Google which shows this correctly:



However, when I start Chrome I've set up to go to Google which displays in the old UI style. It also does this when I select Home which is also set to Google. That's what's been confusing me. Is this a bug?

Setting the New Tab Page Material Design UI flag back to "Default" should allow it.
