Windows 10: Enable or Disable ReFS File System in Windows 8.1 and Windows 10

Discus and support Enable or Disable ReFS File System in Windows 8.1 and Windows 10 in Windows 10 Tutorials to solve the problem; I just did some more testing, and it appears to be a bug since at least build 14393. I get the same issues on both my laptop an desktop. I forgot... Discussion in 'Windows 10 Tutorials' started by Charles Milette, Apr 6, 2016.

The problem is broader. Here is another feature impacted. Create System Image thinks the system is running in Safe Mode with format ReFS turned on. It is OK with the default restored. Already formatted drives are fine. At least my ReFS formatted Storage Space is unaffected.

Yep, it appears that anything that uses VSS is affected.

  3. This looks like one of those simple bugs with broad impact.

    Hopefully it'll be fixed soon.

If one wanted to use ReFS, they could enable being able to format with ReFS, format the drive they want to ReFS, then disable being able to format with ReFS again.

  5. Of course, but this is not the result you want from the tutorial. Are you going to file a FeedBack and post the link here or shall I?

  9. ReFS really is the go-to file system for fixed sized Storage Spaces, since ReFS is much more robust than NTFS. And of course servers, but for home users, if you're thinking of setting up Storage Spaces, using ReFS would be the best route to take.

  10. I already have a Storage Space set up on ReFS. What I would like to do is set up an SSD data drive formatted ReFS for my virtual machine files. However, it is an internally mounted SSD and that does not seem to be allowed.

  11. The problem you are experiencing with System Restore is the fact that the presence of the MiniNT key makes Windows thinks it is running in PE mode. It also causes issues with the system log and build upgrade. (I had fun hours debugging this problem also)

See here: Windows 10 Installation Error 80070032 - Microsoft Community

It might be a good idea to add a warning to the tutorial to disable this key once you're done formatting.

  14. In Windows 10 I format with this in the PE environment (custom WinRE with MiniXP as the OS). Indeed, adding that line will make Windows think it's in PE mode when it's not; thus, critical features will be unavailable.

I could create a PE.iso strictly for ReFS formatting that would work via command-line using simple menu selection and post it in a thread, allowing you to format physical drives using ReFS but staying away from adding MiniNT to your registry.

  15. It looks nice, I would like to have that.

    It's a great idea.
