How to Enable or Disable Taskbar Thumbnail Live Previews in Windows 10


When you hover over the taskbar icon of an opened item (ex: Google Chrome), it will show you a thumbnail preview of its opened windows or tabs.

If you hover over the thumbnail preview of this item, it will instantly show you a live preview (peek) of only that item on your desktop. If you like, you can change the thumbnail live preview hover delay time to how many milliseconds you want instead of showing the live preview instantly.

This tutorial will show you how to enable or disable showing taskbar thumbnail live previews for your account in Windows 10.

Here's How:

1 Do step 2 (on) or step 3 (off) below for what you would like to do.


2 To Enable Taskbar Thumbnail Live Previews
This is the default setting.

This will also enable Peek.



A) Click/tap on the Download button below to download the BAT file below, and go to step 4 below.

4 Save the .bat file to your desktop.

5 Unblock the .bat file, and run it.

6 You will now notice your screen flicker as a command prompt quickly opens and closes to apply the registry changes and restart explorer.

7 You can now delete the downloaded .bat file if you like.

Disable Taskbar Thumbnail Preview?

Hey there,

I was just searching the internet for ways to disable the Taskbar Thumbnail Preview in Windows 10, and I found one that half-worked (only some apps use list view instead of thumbnails). I was wondering if there was a way to completely disable the preview?
I am alright editing the registry.

Disable Taskbar Thumbnail Preview?

I do need to disable de Taskbar Thumbnail Preview in Windows 10. I Use a lot of files such an Msft Excel at the same time, and is difficult to to identify between so many little windows. I need the files listed (stacked) when switching icons on taskbar.

Cannot disable Taskbar live preview in 7!

Hi all,

Recently tried out Windows 7 and decided to run it on my other HDD insted of VMware.

I'm trying to disable the taskbar live preview, and I've tried everything I can find:

> Creating a DWORD reg file named "DisablePreviewWindow" value 1 - Didn't work.

> Creating a DWORD reg file named "TaskbarNoPreview" value 1 - Didn't work.

> Local group policy editer "Turn off taskbar thumbnails" and check enable - Didn't work and noticed that it says "Supported on: Windows Vista Only"...

Can anyone tell me if they know how to turn this off it's really really annoying, and more annoying that everything I've tried dosn't work...

Just to note, it doesn't disable taskbar thumbnail previews, only the live preview of it on the desktop.
