Windows 10: Encripted+Bitlocked files can not be opened on flash drive

Hello!

I have encrypted one folder on my flash drive. Later I have enabled bitlocker for this drive.

After that, when inserting my drive I am entering the password, I can see all the folder and files structure \ names, but I can not open any file.

I have removed bitlocker - no success. I have lost all my most important files. Is there any workaround to resolve the issue?

File back up to bitlockered external drive

Thanks John.

By trial and error the solution is,

• Set the file back up to the desired external USB drive, Back up using file history.
• Run backup to completion.
• Dismount, (Remove) the drive used.
• Remount (Plug in) the drive used for the file back up (Steps 1&2) and encrypt using Bitlocker.

Note you can only encrypt drives using some versions of Windows (Pro for eg not Home)

• Once the external drive has been encrypted dismount.
• Remount the drive, go to the file back up option, Open, Settings, Backup,
  Back up using file history.
• The drive should now still be visible and has been encrypted.
• Accessing the drive will be dependant on how it was set up in Bitlocker,
  Open with this PC, password, pin code etc.
• Repeat file back up as in the first two steps.

BitLocker Save to USB Flash missing?


Hi,

I followed the step by step guide on what Brink wrote up below.

However, when turning ON BitLocker to encrypt the OS drive only, and ask me to where to save the recovery key, I get only the Save to File and not the Save to USB Flash. Has MS taken out the Save to USB selection since WIn 10 version 1511?

I followed all the steps and left BitLocker to its default setting (except for encryption method).

I was able to save the recovery key to a file which was my USB flash drive.

 

Bitlocker on USB flash drive

I am using bitlocker on a porrtable flash drive to secure files. Once it is locked and I open it , if I add files tot he drive will they automatically be encrypted when I close the drive and remove it from the computer?
