Windows 10: Encryption

Hi. Thank you in advance for taking your time to read this.


I was using Windows 8.1 awhile ago. After some time, I noticed that some of my files the name of files, actually have turned green. I did everything to fix this but I couldn't so I gave up since everything was working properly and this was just a color change.


So a few months ago, I decided to upgrade the Windows to 10. I installed it, but I noticed that all those files from previous version 8.1 now appeared with a yellow lock on them. I was asked for ownership and permission when I tried to open them.


I found out my old Windows was probably attacked by a ransomware, which made my files encrypted and green, and now with a new Windows, they're not working.


I installed the 8.1 version again. Now the yellow lock sign has gone, but the files are green again, and I can't open them.


What should I do? Do you think a decryption app will solve this?


I read some where that if I connect my hard drive to a system with Windows XP on it, backup the hard drive, format it and restore the backup again, it will work. What do you think?


I'll be more than happy to get back those files.

Device Encryption not avaiable

• What preventing you from doing this?
• Did you get any error message or code while doing this?

For us to be able to isolate your concern why your devices page says it is not encrypted when you've turn on encryption, kindly answer these questions:

• Does this happen before you encrypt the device?
• Which Windows version currently running on your device?
• What troubleshooting steps have you tried so far?

Encrypting a folder

Hello Bill,

To encrypt a folder in Windows 10 Home, follow these steps:

• Right-click the folder you want to encrypt and click Properties.
• On the General tab, click Advanced.
• Under Compress or Encrypt attributes, click Encrypt contents to secure data.
• Click OK then Apply to save the changes.
