Endless built-in screen power cycling loop when connecting monitor

I have an MSI GS60 laptop that has both HDMI and DisplayPort connectivity and have encountered this issue on two different monitors using multiple cables. Windows initially detects an external monitor, but once I choose that I want to display anything on it (extending, mirroring, etc.) the laptop's main screen powers on/off repeatedly as it usually does when changing display modes but the process never ends and no output is seen on the external monitor. Curiously, this happens only on HDMI on one of my monitors (displayport works), and only on displayport on my other monitor (HDMI works). Any ideas as to potential causes and solutions? All relevant drivers are up to date and I have tried using multiple cables/checking for secure connections.

    :)

  2. Laptop blackscreens and fan spools up, it shuts down, and does it repeatedly.

I have a HP Envy with a 17 inch monitor, and recently after gettign the windows 10 update, the screen froze, went black, and it powered off. When I attempted to reboot it, it would go into an endless boot cycle where the various lights on it would blink,
the fan and possibly the hard drive would spool up, the screen would stay black, and then it would shut down and repeat ad nauseum.

I've yet to find a similar description of this problem. An IT friend of mine suggested it may be a driver issue, and that it is looking for a secondary monitor; not finding it, it continuously reboots. I might believe this if it stayed on long enough for
a splash screen or something to be on the screen if it wasn't black. But the cycle time is awful fast; there simply isnt any time for the cpu to boot properly.

    Any help would be appreciated.

After Bell Update - My battery lasts only 8 hours

From the symptoms you refer, I guess there is an application that gets stuck in an endless loop and takes up all CPU power. Can you install a CPU monitor to see if your processor is always 100% busy?

First, with the configuration where both monitors are working, right click the desktop and choose Display Settings. See if there are just 2 monitors showing. If there are 3, see if you can remove the phantom one.

Obvious, but must ask: are there any warnings indicated in Device Manager under Display Adapters?

    A couple suggestions:
Download the most recent Display Driver for your PC. If available, use the Custom setting to set up the installation and then perform a Clean Installation (this will remove all previous drivers, settings, and display software before installing the new/same driver). Test.

Also could just go into Device Manager and Uninstall the Display Adapter and restart, but the above method is much better.
