Windows 10: Endpoint Protection - why on home PC?

I am running Windows 10 on a simple home computer. Of late I keep finding the PC running slow - Task Manager indicates that this is due to Endpoint Protection using 100% disk utilisation. I am running the default Microsoft Firewall and Avira Antivirus. I can find no information on the relevance of Endpoint Protection on a single machine. Can someone please explain this to me, point me to a suitably explanatory source on-line, or advise what action to take to improve matters. Thank you.

Forefront Endpoint Protection

My computer has not been able to update automatically or manually for 2 months now. I have tried troubleshooting the Forefront Endpoint protection program and and all applicable suggestions offered by the computer without success.

What can I do to start receiving automatic updates again?
