Windows 10: Energy consumption drops after closing/opening lid on a notebook with both Nvidia and Intel...

My notebook Lenovo Z710 has an Intel i7-4800MQ and an Nvidia GT 745M, so it basically has two graphics adapters. It is running Windows 10, using the latest drivers I tried, however, older ones, too.


During normal office work or browsing, the Nvidia hardware should not be active at all, to save energy.


Now I noticed, that after waking the Notebook from standby S3 mode, it has a higher energy consumption. If I then close the lid and re-open it, it drops by ~10 watts. And stays there. I configured Windows to not do anything when closing the lid normal behavior would be standby mode. The notebook runs 10 degrees Celsius cooler afterwards!


Starting hardware detection in the device manager has the same effect. Disabling and then enabling the Nvidia hardware has the same effect. Re-starting the "NVIDIA Display Container LS" service has the same effect, too.


So I suspect it really is the Nvidia card which causes this. The CPU does not clock lower nor does the CPU load drop. So what else could it be?

The question is, what can I do so my notebook wakes up properly with a low energy consumption in the first place without me closing/re-opening the lid? I already tried several Nvidia drivers.

Prevent notebook recovering from sleep by opening the lid


Hello everyone! I have a Sony and an HP notebook with Windows 10 installed. When the computer is on standby and I open the lid or click the mouse, the computer turns on. Despite all the Energy settings in the control panel I cannot fix it. I want the laptop to open ONLY by pushing the power button, like in windows 8 before (i did a clean windows 10 installation not upgrade). In addition, the VAIO has the VAIO control center lid settings and I have properly configured the computer not to do anything when the lid closes or opens. Any ideas?

I want to set my notebook pc to lock when I close the lid, but to still keep running at least a few specific apps or if that is not possible, every app.

I am already aware that I can set the notebook to "do nothing" when I close the lid. I need a setting like that.. except that downloads keep going and the laptop locks and requires a password be entered to use when the lid is opened again.

Is there a way to do this on Windows 10? Maybe there is a 3rd-party (non-Microsoft) app/program that will enable me to do this?

You started right. In power options Set closing the lid to "do nothing".
Then set your screen saver (yes, that old Control panel option) to blank screen, and check option: on resume display logon screen.



In latest builds, easier to find screen saver is to type "screen saver" in Settings app and start it from there.



For your downloads to finish, default power option settings should be fine
