Windows 10: Entering German characters quickly on a UK laptop

I have a UK laptop a Surface Book 2 with a UK layout, and I am learning German. That means I will regularly need to enter characters that are not present on the keyboard, and I am looking for an easy.Charmap is impractical, as are the arcane three-digit character codes, and anyway, I have no Numpad.Microsoft has catered for Americans by giving them a US international keyboard layout with quick shortcuts. That, too, is useless to me since I am in the UK, and I can see from diagrams that it will have @ and " characters in the wrong places, it will swap £ and #, and probably other things.How ca

What language is your keyboard set to?

If you just want the odd German character,click your Start Button, type charmap and hit Enter

If you want more, is your Physical keyboard German, or do you just want to be able to type in German?

Thank you for your rapid response. I have added the character map to my taskbar and can insert what ever I need.

Any of these?

• To insert digits or characters printed at the top of keys, press and hold the corresponding key, or press and hold the function key and press the corresponding key.
• To enter only the characters printed at the top of keys, press the function key twice quickly.
