Windows 10: Error 0x80042412 when restoring from a backup

My original OS (windows 10) was pre-installed in a 1tb hard drive. Immediately after setting up the OS I created a system recovery and saved it in my external hard drive.


My 1tb hard drive broke and I bought a 500gb ssd as a replacement. Now I'm trying to install the backup that I made because I don't want the hassle of installing the drivers of asus one by one. Unfortunately I encountered 0x80042412.


METHODS I'VE TRIED:


1) partitioned the ssd using the windows installer

2) in the BIOS, made sure that the first in boot order is the ssd

3) formatted the ssd to ntfs by using diskpart


All those methods are answers to the same question, but none of those worked.


Any idea what's the problem here?

Also, does the backup contains the product key? I don't want to buy another OS again because this is my second one. Apparently the product keu is embedded in the hardware.

I am having the same problem but with Windows 10.

Can you clarify the steps you took before booting the disk part I am slightly confused. Did you do a blank install of windows and then go back to add the system image later?

Free hard drive backup/restore program?

I am looking for a free (freeware) program that will back up and restore a hard drive. I'm looking to clone a few external hard drives. If the program will backup the used space instead of the whole drive this will be awesome! Thanks for any suggestions.

sorry abought getting back to you. I have a backup setup every Sunday at 11pm. last successful backup was in January, error ( backup volume inaccessible ) error code ( 0x807800c5 ) the laptop new with win 8, upgraded to 8.1 then 10
