Thanks. What is ISO? And what about the second question?

What build version are you on? 14393.969? There is a new update to build 14393.970 that includes a fix for problems updating apps fro the Windows Store, but it's not being delivered through windows update. You can only get it by downloading the stand-alone update package from the Microsoft Update Catalog.
    Cumulative Update KB4016635 for Windows 10 v1607 Build 14393.970

  3. I'm not using 1607, I rolled back to the previous version when I got the Anniversary Update. But within my version I am up to date.

...Except for some strange reason, I just checked Windows Update and now it's saying:
    "Updates are available.
    • Feature update to Windows 10, version 1607."

    Very strange. Very weird coincidence.

So my PC has automatically updated itself to the latest version [1607] (for reasons I'm not sure of - maybe Microsoft is trying to phase out support for version 1511 ahead of the next update?) and the problem has disappeared. The Lenovo Settings app opens fine, and all the apps that couldn't update were automatically updated to the latest versions during the OS update. And just now I checked for app updates manually (a few updates were detected) and clicked update and they all ran fine.

So in the end, my suspicions have been confirmed and it saves me having to wait for the Creators Update in April, so I'm happy (despite the fact that I prefer the old version 1511 start menu).

Your specs say you have Home, so 1607 could have been trying to download to you any time from last August on. Even Pro users can't defer this update any longer, not now it is on the Current Branch for Business. I'm just surprised it's taken so long to get to you. At least it fixed your problems.

Support for 1511 should end 60 days after the Creators update becomes Current Branch for Business, same as is about to happen for the original 10240 release.

Hmmm, on checking it seems MS have just extended the grace period by two months...
No more updates to original Win 10 version 1507/10240 after 26 March?

  6. It already had downloaded (and installed) a while back, I just reverted back to the previous build/version (whichever is the correct word). It gives you the option to do that for a certain number of days after the update if you go to Settings -> Update & Security -> Windows Update -> Update history -> Recovery options -> Go back to an earlier build. The reason I said I'm not sure why it updated itself again is because (as far as I understand) once you revert to a previous build, it won't update again to the version you downgraded from, it will wait till the next update after that is released and only update then. At least that's how I understood it to work.

For support purposes I have a machine I keep on 1511 using the 'hide updates' tool. When 1607 recently became CBB its status had changed and I had to hide it again - it was effectively a 'new' release (or more accurately a re-release). That probably explains its reappearance on your machine.

CBB=Current Branch for Business? Meaning that business versions get updated more slowly because they need to be more stable, or something like that? And I'm assuming that 'hide updates' is only for Windows 10 Pro?

There are quality updates with security/bug patches (cumulative updates) and features updates (1511, 1607, etc.) which upgrade the OS to the next version. Which version is current for you depends on which service branch you are on. Most of us are on the Current Branch. Business users get features updates later, but everyone gets the latest security fixes. Insiders get the features updates ahead of the rest of us to test/debug them. Microsoft explains how it works here...
Overview of Windows as a service

Pro can defer updates, effectively switching it from CB to CBB. It's 'defer', not 'block' so they will get the features updates when CBB does. There is a tool from Microsoft that can hide updates, useful if a driver update causes problems for particular hardware. This works on Home and Pro alike.

  10. Interesting. Thanks for the explanation.

  11. So my computer has updated to Creators Update now, and I'm getting a similar problem. Apps like Photos and Groove Music won't open - they just hang on the loading screen, and Windows Store does the same. However if I leave that for a while it does load properly but it has a load of app updates that aren't going through. All of them said Error - see details (the error code is 0x80080005) and when I tried restarting the download a few of them started saying 'acquiring licence' but nothing was happening. I just wanted to seek some advice from the people here - should I just wait for the next update/patch in the hope that it will fix this or am I better off downgrading back to the Anniversary Update (under which everything worked fine for me)?

N.B. I ran wsreset.exe and also the Windows Store Troubleshooter, the troubleshooter found that "service registration is missing or corrupt" and said it was fixed but this didn't resolve the problem.
