Having been away from tactical IT for a while, it's amazing what I don't know

I presume I should select Windows 10 as opposed to 'New additions'. (Not sure if new additions means latest/greatest).

NVM...I selected Windows 10 latest edition, and it is already downloaded. The other was still at 1%.

    Continuing on.

    Just a point of note:

I watched the video from Ten Forums from one of the lniks above, and the video in another link above. ONe of them DID install updates, and one of them DID NOT.

In my case I will not be selecting install updates, as updates are failing and that's why I'm going through this process at all.

FYI...I'm providing how it's going etc as I go along hoping it will be helpful if anyone is following the thread for their issues. I suppose many would prefer I do it in one post, but I may miss something if I try to do that later.

Why would I do that when I apply updates they fail? I do plan to do them after the repair. Given your recommendation, I guess I can try that, because...

I need to start over anyway. Not sure what to think about this. I get the following message:

So, I'm going to do that now.

How much room is available on your drive?
    Are you sure you're virus-free?
You'd want to grab the updates when doing the repair - makes things go better.

Before you try again, please download and run this:
    ADWCleaner
    Downloads - AdwCleaner - ToolsLib
Tell me if it finds anything on the system.

Also open up File Manager>This PC and tell me how much space is available on your OS drive.

The C: drive has 69.6 gb free.

As I commented in first post, a sfc /scannow had failed at 49%. But I just went into the drive's Tools/Scan and it was fine.

I use Windows Defender, so only based on that do I think it is virus free. I'm running Trend Micro's Housecall on it now.

IN the meantime, I did restart the setup, and told it to install updates per your suggestion, and it appears to have finished. It's at the prompt to close everything, and proceed. But I'm going to let Housecall finish before I do that.

Quite sufficient, so not sure why you got that error, unless there is a problem with your drive.
So chkdsk scan said everything was fine?
    What about Crystal Disk Info?
But, I did not ask you to run that, I asked you to run ADWCleaner.

Sorry. I think I missed that post. So here's were I'm at.
    Windows Setup

By the time I realized I missed the ADW instruction I had started the setup process. It went like this on the second pass per my last update on this}:

    • I selected to do the Updates. Got no errors
    • Continued through, and left it to do it's reboots and install
    • When I came back it had an error at 92%
    • When I closed the message, it did not reboot. It was in windows, what seemed to apparently be like it was when I started setup. Same patches were not installed
    • I tried again to install the patches, and they failed again
    Crystal Disk Info
It's OK on the C: Drive. One of the drives in the Storage Space is under caution. Images below:

    ADW Cleaner

It ran through, and came up with a message about a chrome extension that is deprecated. That has been cleaned up and all appears well.

    Next Steps

I think I'll await your feedback at this point. Just to recap, my impression, based on the above info,:

1.) is that all integrity tests are good (albeit a Caution on one of the drives on the D: Storage Space...which I wouldn't think would affect any of this).
    2. The run of the setup from the Windows ISO failed, and left me as I was at start. No information on why it failed
    3. The integrity checks being good indicates that nothing was fixed that should be of consequence.
    4. I need to start the setup again and see what happens

    Thank you.
Questions: What is on Disk 3 (the one that has the reallocated sector count warning)? In other words, is that the drive with all your data? Have you moved your user libraries there, or to another disk?

The reason I'm asking is, I think we need to disconnect all non-essential drives, and any additional monitors, usb devices, etc.

I'd also like to see your disk layout. Can you post a screen shot of Disk Management please?

Disk 3 is one of 4 disks that makes up the Storage Management setup. Then there is C: which is of course the boot disk.

An interesting note: Drive 3 with the warning has 99 reallocated sectors, with a threshold of 36. Drives 0,1,and 2 have 200 reallocated sectors with a threshold of 140, and no caution warning. Seems inconsistent, and makes me think that rather than a warning to consider, the threshold should be changed. (I really have no idea when reallocated sectors would be considered an issue.

Another note Keep this in mind: Not sure now if I mentioned this earlier, but the whole thing that actually started me down this path was that my Macrium Backups fail when backing up to the storage space, which then led me to discover the failing updates.

This 'server' is really pretty basic. I don't have any USB stuff on it, in fact the mouse and keyboard typically are not even attached, nor a monitor. I'm just using it to do backups to from my laptop and desktop.
Another Note: I probably should mention that it is pretty old hardware:

    Error 0x80070057 - Updates failing

I did another search on 0x80070057, and found this article.

I thought maybe selection '2. Windows Update error 0x80070057 'should be tried. But I can't rename the directory as it is held open by svchost.exe, and I'm thinking it not a good idea to shut down that service.

Well, I decided to run the setup again but without selecting install updates.

It successfully finished this time. So I went into Windows Update and started the update process. All updates worked and installed except for (KB4088776), which got the 0x800736cc error. Like the one on the topic of thsi thread, indication is there are corrupt system files, even though I just did the refresh.

My friend tells me to just get a Mac. *Huh

I am going to follow suggestions in this post.

Got through step 3 at this page. Came up with this result from the sfc /scannow

The log was quite long, and didn't provide information that I knew what to do with.

Now moving on to step 4 and try it in safe mode.
