Windows 10: Error 0x800f081f tried @ install KB4598242 WAS at ver 20H2 B 19042.685

*Sad Help? Home version 64 bit. Win update called for update to 19042.746 but it failed to error code 0x800f081f. Disk cleanup tried again, same error from WU. Tried sfc, same error code WU. SFC reported it could not find 4 reg. entry values 'missing' along with 2 'qmgr*.dat entries in the Admin sfc window (plus) a comment that some files were not repairable (paraphrase). Tried a system restore (only one I had was 26 Dec 2020 at 20H2 B 19042.630, same error with trying to get to B 19042.746 in win updates. I even downloaded the KB4598242 file from here in TF's, every one failed without giving a reason (except the error code in WU). This is an older laptop without a UEFI (imbedded license??) so it was an upgrade from win 7 to win 10 home 64bit. Until this 'burp', no problems using WU. *Sad


My question is what would you suggest that would get me to the latest 20H2? Right now stuck on 19042.630 ver of 20H2. Oh, SSU is installed (KB4598481). I do not know if I could 'go back' to b 19042.685 by undoing the system restore (restore was last night late, since then I might have done a disk cleanup) but will that solve anything?

KB4598242 CU Windows 10 v2004 build 19041.746 and v20H2 19042.746 Win Update

Just finished repair install and now at 19042-746 on the problem computer. Heck of a way to have to do it, but it works. On the last 2 updates I have had to do a repair install on at least one computer.

This is what I've done to date.

1- downloaded the update reset batchfile from the source given, and run it.
2-immediately rebooted the machine
3-downloaded the relevant ssu, although this is listed as installed in Control Panel > Programs. Running that msu confirms that it's already on the system.
4-downloaded the KB4598242 msu from Microsoft, and run it. It started Ok but failed with the same error 0x8007000D
5-checked with sfc /scannow - no problems reported.

In other words, I've stepped through the suggested processes, but still end up with the update failing to install, and with the same error as when update attempted through WU.

I may try the whole process over again, before attempting anything else.

ASUS Vivobook running Win 10 20H2 Home - OS Build 19042.685 (per winver)

WU offers, downloads and then installs KB4598242, and then fails with a "files missing or similar (my recall)-will try again" plus error code 0x8007000D.

I tried letting WU rerun it, same problem, and also cleared SoftwareDistribution and catroot2 folders, then rerunning. Same problems, same error.

The KB4598242 is listed on MS as being for W10 20H2, and for OS builds 19041.746 and 19042.746 - which aren't my build of 19042.685. I guess this may be why it doesn't install!

Any suggestions as to how I deal with this, including blocking this from WU?

I have removed SoftwareDistribution folder etc. which has of course removed the failed update from Update History. However, looking at Updates via Control Panel, I see an update KB4599841 Security Update, same date as first failed install of the other KB..242 (18/1), but this Security Update doesn't appear in Update History, though the MSRT on same date does, under Other Update.
