Windows 10: Error check drive has damaged my Windows Instalation

Hello Guys,

Just when I was happy with my installation I error checked my main C: drive with is a Samsung SSD, Windows reported that it had found some errors and it needed to be rebooted to correct them. I rebooted the PC and the check disk did it's repairs and it booted back in to Windows. I noticed straight away that the start menu had stopped working and when I opened Windows Explorer or did anything within it (like right click properties) or any settings windows like control panel it would take for ever. Opening programs like Internet Explorer work fine.

I have tried System Restoring to before I did the drive repair and sfc /scannow and Dism/Online/Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth but I still have the problems. The SFC found errors and corrected them but still no Start Menu.

I do have a Trueimage backup from Last Friday which I will have to use if I cannot sort this out. Yesterday due to a on going occasional BSD I had fully uninstalled my Nvidia Geforce Video drivers using a utility that was recommended to me on this forum, I then reinstalled the drivers and it had been fine up until I did the Scan for errors so I don't think it's nothing to do with that.

Does anyone have any idea's what I could try?

No there are no error message, I can boot in to windows fine it's the Start Menu, File Explorer. modern apps and settings that are causing the problems.

I'm really fed up with this now, I've restored my windows installation from a true image back up last Friday and everything was back to normal. I've stupidity run the disc check on c: drive again and repaired the errors and the computer is back to the original
problem of no Start menu and file explorer painfully slow!!

I assume if I restore again and don't manually run the disc check it will automatically run at some stage when maintenance is carried out.

Anyone got any ideas on this one?

Got a lot of 3rd party programs installed? Running the disk repair and then going straight to a clean install might be the most conservative approach.

 

Yes I have lots of stuff installed but nothing has been altered up until the problem occurred, I had been getting a few BSD's so I expect the disk errors are from them, see post Video scheduler internal error BSD on Windows 10 Pro

I'm looking to rebuilding my PC next year so if I can keep this installation going until then I will gladly reformat and install.

 

OK, well, repairing your Win 10 install (right after disk repair) with an in-place upgrade from Win10 ISO could be a good option as long as the system is functional enough to mount the ISO and double click on setup.exe (even though it may take ages) - or if you already have the install media on a flash drive created using Media Creation Tool, you wouldn't have to wait on the ISO to mount.

Obviously, you'd want the upgrade to keep all your data and programs/apps.

 

I have made a Windows 10 DVD using the media creation tool. So I could use an in place upgrade option if I'm already on Windows 10?. I was going to try a refresh next. I have posted on the MS forum so maybe they will have something I could try

 

Absolutely, you're just running an upgrade on the upgraded system and it's really a good shortcut (lacking a good full image to restore) that might resolve a lot of problems. I had a similar problem (different cause, but same symptoms) on my wife's laptop - ran the in-place upgrade and it was resolved like white on rice.

As I understand it, refresh will NOT keep your programs intact - and double checking, Brink states this in the tutorial. It's a very good tutorial, have a look-see.

If you can get to the "run" dialog or "run new task" in task manager, you might get setup.exe to execute more quickly than going through File Explorer.

 

Ah great stuff, I can get to for Explorer it just takes about 45-60 seconds to open as does anything to do with settings or modem apps. Normal windows program open straight away and operate normally.


Did your in place up upgrade keep all your settings and tweaks etc?

 

It did as far as I can tell - there wasn't extensive tweaking per se, it could have been that one thing I did or another that caused the problem in the first place - but the userid was intact, fully functional, as well as the programs, including Office, Outlook in particular, even IE was still the default browser as I had set it.

I've just done an in place upgrade and the start menu still does not work, really strange. I suppose a full format and install must be on the cards unless you can suggest something else I can try. I might and recover an old image, I have 3 weeks of images, I tried last Fridays image, maybe I will try the previous Friday's.

And you DID do the file repairs just prior to doing the in-place upgrade?

I guess trying an earlier restore you might get back to a place where the files are undamaged but then you 'll have to be on guard about what damaged the files and try to avoid that. More frequent images could be insurance against that. Other than that, yes a clean install is a possibly better solution, but only if the cause of your disk damage doesn't recur plus you have to do the extra work of reinstalling all your programs.
