"Error Checking" stuck on "Scanning and reporting..."

Recently I got a 2TB external hard drive from Amazon that seemed to have fairly good reviews. When I got it, it seemed to work fine, but what I didn't know was that the hard drive was corrupted. Don't know how, since I got it brand new. I'm not an expert on external hard drives so I don't know if it's normal for hard drives to be corrupted first thing after being bought. One day I was moving a folder with a bunch of videos to my external hard drive and then I waited for around an hour and thirty minutes. After the transfer was done, I got a message saying the error 0x80070570. After that, I tried deleting the corrupted folders because I literally lost the videos in those folders which I'm still upset about, but I've been researching that the videos I lost weren't deleted but hidden; that's another problem that I have so if anyone has an answer for restoring my hidden videos, please be my guest, but it said, "An unexpected error is keeping you from deleting the file. If you continue to receive this error, you can use the error code to search for help with this problem. Error 0x80070570: The file or directory is corrupted and unreadable." When I went to repair my hard drive by right clicking the drive and clicking Properties > Tools > "Check" on "Error Checking" > Scan drive, it gets stuck on "Scanning and reporting..." and I've put my PC to sleep so it can scan and repair overnight, but when I see the next day, it hasn't even moved once. It's been stuck on 0% and I can't cancel it either. I have to open Task Manager and restart File Explorer for me to be able to cancel it. I want to be able to repair this hard drive but for some reason it doesn't let me. My sister has a laptop, too so I tried repairing it on there and I have the same exact problem on there too, so I think the issue is my hard drive. What could the problem be?

    :)

Windows Vista error fix Scan is stuck

thanks so much for the thorough explanation!!! my last update was in 2017,and yes my system was stuck searching for an update for hours that's why I thought an error scan was needed as it was running super slow before. I will try to reboot as Bill Smithers
suggested and check for my last update date and reply.

    Disable specific error report

    Hello Borate,

There is no way for us to disable error 69 reporting from the Event Viewer. However, we can create a custom filter for the event logs and hide error 69 from the report. You may follow these steps, how to:

    • Open Event Viewer. Under Windows logs, click
      System.

    • On the Action tab, click Filter Current Log.

    • You can now filter error 69 using Filter current log. On the screenshot provided, I filtered the error 69. I type in 1-69, and starts again with 70-100000 so it will not count in error 69. Once you’re done, click Okay.

    • Click Save Filter to Custom View. Add the name
      and description then click OK.

Hiding or stopping Event Viewer from reporting Error 69 may not address the root cause of this issue. We would highly suggest that you run the System File Checker (SFC) and Deployment Image Servicing and Management (DISM) scans to check for missing or corrupted
system files, if there are any. To run the said scans, follow the steps below:

    • Press Windows key + X
    • Click Command Prompt (Admin)
    • Type the following commands, one after the other completes the scan:

      sfc /scannow

      dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth
If the results of SFC or DISM scan would state that it found corrupted files and repaired those, you would need to restart your computer to apply the changes. Afterwards, check if you would still encounter the Error 69 from Event Viewer which you were getting.

Let us know how it goes.
