Windows 10: Error Code 0x80004005 W10 Pro 64bit

I allowed "update" 1909 to happen 2 nights ago and needless to say it fubar'd the OS. I managed to reset and keep the user data and have re-installed all non-Windows software and the OS build is now 1909. The PC is successfully running updates.

However, I noted that it left a directory called Windows.old. I am happy that the system is working as it should but when I try to delete the Windows.old directory or any contents, I get the Unspecified Error 0x80004005. I note other thread discussions that this could be related to Update but this is working normally.

How can I delete this unnecessary directory and clear this error code generation in the process, please?

I have looked over many other posts about this, all with the same error code, but with a different problem.

I have a computer thats a few years old, it has an ABIT kn8-sli motherboard, and its running off windows XP.

I was having problem with the hard drive before I gave up on it awhile back, and now I have come back and resolved that problem, but now when I get to the login screen and type in the password it says its in need of an update, then when it asks me if I want to update I click Yes, and then it says it won't work due to error 0x80004005.

The only operating system I have currently is windows 7. Do I need to go buy a new OS or is this recoverable?

• Are getting the error code only when transferring a specific file to your PC?
• Have you tried transferring the same file from USB to a different computer?
• Were you able to transfer files using the same USB to your computer before the issue started?
