Windows 10: Error code 0x800703e6 , cannot use SFC and DISM

As title said, error code 0x800703e6 from updating, immediately error shown after downloading started for 10-2023 update, DISM and SFC will not work, SFC says service not started, DISM says invalid memory access locationWindows memtest result came back no issues.

Im in need of help. This topic is found on Google and Microsoft discussions alot however I have yet to find a solution that resolved my issue. Im facing the following issues

- whenever I try to do a windows update i get the following: Windows update error 0x800703e6

Ive followed many solutions online and non have worked. The below has also failed in cmdprompt when trying to execute -

- DISM ERROR 998

- SFC scan fail

Then I tried to reset my computer but that was also unsuccessful. I got to the last stage and received an error (0x8007042b)and was reverted back to original settings.

Has anyone found a solution for this? Any help would be appreciated!!

 

Can't get SFC and DISM to work anymore on Win10

Ok, can someone help me out because this crap is starting to piss me off. There was once a time when you could simply run SFC and DISM to check Windows files integrity and if there were any problems found with the local files, Windows repaired it automatically. The reason why I want to run this is because I'm getting stupendously huge amount of errors and warnings in Event Viewer, but I don't want to run refresh because it'll mess up tons of apps.

Commands I used:
sfc /scannow
Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

Fast forward few years and we now have glorious Windows 10. Trying to run the same tools, they find errors but stubbornly refuse to fix ANYTHING. What's the god damn point of it then?

Sfc finds issues but can't repair them and DISM constantly bitches how it can't find the source. All this used to work directly in Windows 7, but in Win 10, nothing. This was one of the best features to get OS back in good state and they go and ruin it. Because Microsoft!

Nothing worked. And they keep mentioning install.wim where my Windows image downloaded from Microsoft itself! only carries install.esd which I can't seem to use with anything.

I've also tried this tool:

Which again wants .wim file and refuses to work with esd.

Hi Dante,

It sounds like your AV is blocking DISM/SFC, which, in turn, generates the error 0x800703e6. I see four Symantec kernel drivers running. Have you tried uninstalling Symantec products to see if that helps? If that resolves the issue, you can install Symantec later (until then, Microsoft Defender AV will protect your computer.)

CBS & DISM logs



Follow these steps to collect the CBS logs.

1. Open the folder “C:\Windows\Logs\“
   
2. Select the two folders, namely, CBS and DISM.
   
3. Right-click on the section, and click Send to → Compressed (zipped) folder.
   

Windows cannot create the Compressed (zipped) Folder here.

Autoruns log

• Download Autoruns from Microsoft, and run it as administrator.
  Autoruns for Windows - Sysinternals
  
• Wait for the entries to populate.
  
• Save the Autoruns log to an .ARN file.
  
• Zip the ARN file and upload/share it on OneDrive.
  

MSINFO32 log

• Open MSINFO32.EXE as administrator.
  
• In the MSINFO32 screen, press Ctrl + S and save the system information report (.NFO file).
