Windows 10: Error During Storage Spaces Optimization

I just added two new drives to Storage Spaces after running low on space. I started the optimization process, and just 1% into it I got a message of "Error Failed; Remove Drive" on one of my older drives, and I'm not sure what to do. The optimization process is still running and I can see the new drives slowly getting filled and I can even see data being reduced on the "failed drive." Should I just wait until optimization is complete?

Storage Spaces Optimization

Hoping someone can help me here.

I'm running Windows 10 and I'm having issues re-building my Storage Space. I had two 3 TB drives in a 2-way mirror. At some point, the connection failed on one drive and took them both down.

I have successfully added a third 3 TB drive to the pool and retired the broken drive. I'm trying to optimize/rebalance the pool now, but when I run Optimize-StoragePool, it runs for awhile, then I'm getting this error message:

Storage Spaces Disappears After Replacing Boot Drive

Did you check Windows View update history list to see if KB4568831 has already been installed? I would think it has and that is why you got the message you did.

If you have not run the Storage Spaces troubleshooter there are instructions in the other link on do it manually. What is accomplished in either case is that your storage spaces will be set to read only which will allow you to have access to the data on your storage space drive.

The latter manual steps return the Storage Spaces drive to read/write and run optimization, defrag, and integrity routines. If your install is up to date then you should find the cumulative update KB4568831 installed in history. If you have upgraded to 20H2 then the patch discussed elsewhere to address the issue with Storage Spaces showing as RAW is rolled into the upgrade. In either case the manual optimization, defrag, and integrity routines can be run.

 

Re-claim Free Space in Storage Spaces Volume

I have a Win10 machine with 1x 500GB SSD (boot drive) and 3x 3TB HDD. I have storage spaces set up for the HDDs and have noticed that any deleted data in the volume does not change "usage" according to storage spaces. Now it says my volume is full despite
having only ~5TB on it. I have linked screenshots of my output where relevant.

• Storage Space Config
• Current Storage Space Status
• Current Drive Status
• Weird allocations per WizTree (this is a couple days old so the #s may not match up exactly with the rest)

How do I get my free space back?

Here is what I tried already after a lot of searching and nothing has worked:

• Optimize Volume via the GUI (0% trimmed; 99% efficiency) - No Changes
• Optimize-Volume Slab Consolidation
• Optimize-Volume Defrag
  • ERROR - Volume Full (I deleted 40GB worth of data and still got a "volume full" error)
  • I tried this defrag manually before the drive was "full" and it ran the defrag but I didnt get any space back
• Chkdsk
• Empty Recycle bin, restart, etc.

Is there anything I can do short of deleting the volume and starting over?

Can I prevent in the future? Because if this is just the nature of Storage Spaces they won't work for me.
