Windows 10: Error Message - SYSTEM_THREAD_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED (athwb.sys)

Hi,
I installed Win10 on my Toshiba NB550D (Win 7 starter) laptop and everything looked OK at the completion of the installation. I had the Win 10 desktop display and all my desktop icons were present and correct,. However on my initial reboot the PC went into a continuous restart loop during which the following error message was displayed SYSTEM_THREAD_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED (athwb.sys). I have done a bit of preliminary research and it seems to me that the Atheros WiFi Network Adapter Driver may not be compatible with Win 10. I have restored the PC back to Win 7 to check things out further as follows:-
Adapter Model - Atheros AR9002WB-1NG
Existing Driver - Ver 9.2.0.206 Date 17/12/2010

I located a later version driver which is said to be compatible with Win 10 (Ver 10.0.0.308) and does contain the file athwb.sys which was mentioned in the error message so I'm hopeful that, if I can install it, everything might be OK when I reinstall Win 10. My problem is that, in Win 7 mode, the Device Manager Update Driver facility says that the current driver is the most up to date one and would not install the Win 10 compatible one. This leads me to think that the driver update has to be done in the Win 10 mode. Is my assumption correct and, if so, how do I get to do the driver update in Win 10 mode when I cannot load Win 10 after the initial installation procedure? Does it involve starting it in "Safe" (or any other) mode? I'm anxious to try again provided that I am reasonably satisfied that I have an answer to the problem. Windows 10 Install procedure was stopped after about 2 hours of running very wel.

After about 2 hours of installing Windows 10, the process was suddenly stopped at the start of the function "Configuring Settings".

After stopping an error message appeared on a blue screen with following reason for the error:

SYSTEM_THREAD_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED (athwb.sys)

After restarting the system the original Windows (8.1) was opened.

I carried out the whole process 3 times and the result was 3 times exactly the same!

The computer on which this occurred is the Toshiba Laptop "Satellite".

Can anyone give me a hint what the reason for this error may be?

 

Blue screen after updating to Windows 10 on startup

Hi,

Installed windows 10 on a Toshiba Satellite that was running Windows 7 installation ran fine but on windows loading screen it BOSDs.

error code is System_thread_exception_not_handled (athwb.sys)

will start in safe mode, i did get windows to start once by uninstalling wifi drivers and graphics drivers but didnt last too long before it

BOSD again and havnt been able to replicate the success again.

found a few posts on the issues but havnt had much success

any ideas much appreciated thanks.

In the BIOS of your laptop you can switch off peripherals like your Wifi and other built in extra hardware.
In Windows (7/8) go to "My Computer" right click and choose properties and Device manager.
Expand "Network Adapters" and locate the Wifi Device.
Right click and Uninstall
Restart your laptop

Open your Bios at Startup and disable the Wifi adapter.
start the laptop and make sure the Device Manager no longer shows the Wifi Adapter
Upgrade to Windows 10
after upgrading, restart, go to Bios settings and re-activate the Wifi adapter

Go in Safe mode, update the WiFi driver with Ver 10.0.0.308

 

Many thanks - I sort of tipped that this would be the best way to go and am sorry that I didn't venture forth and do it but I couldn't afford to take the chance of disabling my PC permenantly in either OS by continuing into uncharted waters. Many thanks again.
