Error: The disk is write protected, while accessing SD card

Hello,I am getting an error when trying to modify any files on my SD card saying that the Disk Is Write Protected.I have followed the advice in the https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/all/error-the-disk-is-write-protected-while-accessing/e9c9869d-3704-44c2-881b-70069905175e thread completely. It does not appear to be an issue with the card since the card is editable on another Windows PC. The data on the card is not important to me to keep. I have tried formatting it but windows10 does not give me this option.I have tried:Click on the search bar on the left hand bottom corner

  2. Error: The disk is write protected, while accessing SD card

    Hello,

Thank you for writing to Microsoft Community Forums.

Usually, the write protected disks doesn’t allow any user to copy, transfer or format the disk. However, as you are able to use the SD card on another computer, we can try to change the attributes while the SD card is connected
to the computer where it shows the write protection.

    1. Click on the search bar on the left hand bottom corner of the taskbar.
    2. Type CMD and right click on it and select on
      Run as administrator.
    3. Now type diskpart and hit enter.
    4. Type list disk and hit enter
    5. Now, type select disk # (the number of the disk instead of #)
    6. Type attributes disk clear readonly and hit enter.
    7. Type clean and hit enter.

    Note:
The clean command will clear all the data on the SD/USB disk. Please back up the data, if you want to clean the disk.

    Hope it helps.

  3. How to disable write-protection for SD-Card ?

Hello. I am trying to perform a firmware update for my DSLR camera, and so have to copy some files in the root directory of my SD Card. I usually transfer the files from my camera to my PC by plugging the usb cable and using the camera brand's software utility so thisis the first time I am trying to actually copy something ON the card by using my laptop's sd-card reader slot.

Upon trying to copy the file, I get a "The disk is write protected. Remove the write-protection or use another disk".

I can confirm having tried the following without any success:

    1. Checked the physical switch on the SD memory card to be in the correct position

    2. Performed a diskpart from the cmd-line as administrator with the following operations:

    DISKPART> select disk 5

Disk 5 is now the selected disk.

    DISKPART> list partition

    Partition ### Type Size Offset
    ------------- ---------------- ------- -------
    Partition 1 Primary 29 GB 4096 KB

    DISKPART> attributes disk clear readonly

    Disk attributes cleared successfully.

    DISKPART> select partition 1

Partition 1 is now the selected partition.

    DISKPART> attributes volume clear readonly

    Virtual Disk Service error:
The operation is not supported on removable media.

    DISKPART> detail disk

    3. Added a 32-bit D-WORD value key named WriteProtect to the windows registry at HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\ with value 0

After performing these steps I am still denied permission to write to the SD Card. Can anybody please help me, I feel like I am going insane with this operating system, this being one of the innumerable list of problems I am continuously having with Win10 since I first installed it two years ago. Sometimes I feel like I should uninstall it...

I should mention the the SD-Card in question is functioning perfectly and when inserted into my camera it writes the pictures without any issue.

    Thank you.

    Write Protected SD card

    Hi Ophiolite

i am sorry, if there is no lock switch on the side of that SD card, that SD card has failed . . .

If you get a 'Write-Protected', 'Insert Disk' or 'Format Disk' error on an SD card or USB flash drive, that means it has failed, you will find a lot of 'fixes' available on the Internet, sadly none of those will work . . .
