  2. Errors whilst backing up

    A very merry Christmas!

I have had this problem with, 'Some files were not backed up', for several months now, and have largely ignored it, even though it was mildly annoying.

Today I decided to give my PC a 'Christmas present' so had a go at sorting said problem.

I used 'Method 2' and much to my surprise, it worked first time, so thank you very much indeed to the author of this fix.

    Regards,

    David

Happens to me just trying to setup a backup, before configuration saved or any actual backup begins. Win 10 Pro, fully up to date.

I had the same problem and could not find any info online that worked for me. I did some snooping and found that those folders didn't exist at C:\Windows\System32\config\systemprofile\. I created the Documents and Pictures folder and problem solved.

An update on my issues; when I upgraded to 1511, my system became unstable with explorer.exe crashing and restarting non-stop about once per second. Resets and the like failed to help; eventually I used a DVD to reinstall the original release of 10, did the updates, even did the 1511 update again, this time with only small issues. A few issues that had been present went away; the never working bluetooth finally installed and ran properly, and now Windows Backup works correctly.

I learned a few lessons, biggest of which is; if you have the choice, have no data on your 'system' drive. Also, keep copies handy of all app installers in case you have to reinstall apps after rebuilding a system. I've heard plenty of times from people who choose to blow away their system installations once in a while and reinstall just to clean them up. We shouldn't have to, but being prepared to do so may help you get out of trouble some day.

I wondered what constitutes 'data' in your lesson learned
'if you have the choice, have no data on your 'system' drive.'
My interpretation is that 'documents and other such files, images etc' (i.e. data) be stored elsewhere rather than in the user account folder. I'm assuming the user account with its subfolders are on the 'system drive'
Or ....do you mean data type files stored at C:\
The reason I'm asking is a friend has had difficulties and he has one main drive and it is not divided.

I don't like things stored under user; way too easy for Windoze to fry that structure. I usually put common download and document directories on each PC, maybe also a photos directory as well. I prefer them on a second drive. If they have to be on the primary drive and it cannot be subdivided into '2' drives (partitions), I want the directories separate from \user to make it easy to copy them off.

Keep in mind that even under a full reset of a system, it is easy to chose to not wipe out other drives, but very easy to blow away C:.

I put in several drives and one was to act as the user documents so I have never stored stuff in the subfolders of the C: user account.
The friend has one drive (1Tb) which was not subdivided. He had placed his huge folder of images into the Pictures folder.
Creating a Macrium Reflect image of that drive was going to take forever. I suggested he start using an external for those files.
Now you point out an important fact about reset.
The friend indicated doing a reinstall and in his case it would involve moving off all his files or have to be a refresh
Fortunately he has backed off on that action choice and I'm not asking <grin> It was me to do the task. I wasn't really keen.

Laptops usually come with only 1 drive with only 1 usable partition (there is often a small recovery partition). PC companies set a bad example this way, IMHO. When I built my tower I had a second, large drive but didn't think much about where data would go; that's all changed now, even though the C drive disk is rather large. Also, recently I'd added a much larger external USB3 based backup drive but until all this could not get Windows Backup to work properly with it.

    Hi,

Not their fault but rather MS' for including user folders such as "Downloads" , "Documents" etc. and having these pointing to the C:\ drive.
Easy enough to change under Win 10 though.

    Cheers, *Wink
